Question

i have heard conflicting stories on what size carb to use. i always hear to go smaller than too big. here is the catch. my motor builder says to go with a 1000cfm dominator. others tell me to go with a 850 doulbe pumper. the car is a 72 dart with a 440 in it. compression is 10.8 to 1 with a 575 lift cam in it. the heads are indy sr's. they flow about 250-260cfm. the car will be a street strip car.
any help will be appreciated
thanks in advance

It all matters what rpm you are going to rev out to. Here is a nice way of figuring out what size carb to run. cubic inches times the maximum rpm all divided by 3456. This equation will give you the cfm flowed at 1.0:1 volumetric efficiency. Your motor probably has a higher volumetric efficiency than this. Do the math then see what works best. I would say either one of the Holley 4150 mech. sec.(950 cfm or 1000 cfm) carbs.

I'm currently building a similar combo: a punched out 383 stroked with the muscle motors kit to 431 cubes, SR heads, ultradyne or roller cam (haven't decided yet), spinning it to 7000 or so. I was looking at the 1050 Dominator, but am probably going to use the Race Demon 825cfm RS carb. I talked to Demon as well as the people at Indy and they said it would feed the motor, no problem, because it actually flows over 975cfm @ 28". I agree with IrockFords on this one-- do the math, but it sounds like you're gonna need something around 950-1000cfm's.

This is what worked for me.
With the 440 12-1/2 to 1 comp .590 lift purple shaft, M1 single plane manifold, 915 heads, and 835 cfm BG gold claw the car ran best of 11.06 @ 121 mph. Tried 1150 dominator and ran the same. This was in a 69 Road Runner that weighed 3500 with driver.
The dominator will work better if you are going to turn over 6500 rpm.
This is a hard one to answer as everyone has different views and thats great. What works for me might be a nitemare for someone else.
