I have a recently rebuilt 79 360 in a 70 Dart. Cam is a MP 284 duration 484 lift, has headers, stock, brand new rockers, push-rods and rocker shafts. The problem I'm having is excessive slop in the rockers. There is NO lifter pre-load. The engine came rebuilt without replacing rods and rockers. So, hoping to gain a few thou. I bought all new stuff, to no avail. What gives? Do I need custom rods to take up the slack? or is there adjustable rods available? Any help here would really be appreciated, thanks in advance.

How are you checking the preload ? Are the lifters pumped up, full of oil ? Measure your pushrod length, I have disassembled different engines, and found different pushrod lengths, even different lengths in the same engine,a mistake on someones part.

Sterling,I dont have to check the preload to tell there is slop, when the piston is up on any given cyl. there is gap at the rocker. Yes the lifters are pumped. The rods are new Federal Mogal, checked the part # twice to make sure.

Crane makes a nice set of adj. roller rockers,or you can buy MP adj. a little cheaper. You can shim up the rocker Shafts with alum. spacers if the rods are a few thousands to long, but I really like Cranes set up.I got a set on E-Bay.Just tighten them up to they wont spin buy hand.. then a 1/4 turn more.Done

You 've got slack because your cam has a smaller base circle than stock and you probably used composition head gaskets instead of the factory steel shim type. Mopar performance has adjustable length pushrods available or you can go to adjustable rockers which also will require differant pushrods. Shimming rocker shaft will only make your problem worse.

I bought some adjustable pushrods for my 440 from Smith brothers in Oregon. 1-800-367-1533. If I recall, they were only about $6.00 each. Working good so far with 21k on the engine.

Thanks to all who posted, I ordered the MP adjustable pushrods today. They'll take 10 days to get here as there are none to be had in Canada and will have to be ordered from the U.S. I'll post how they worked out. Thanks again.
