Hi, I am currently planning and setting a budget for my first rebuild, I am going to rebuild a 440 from a '69 charger R/T that has never been rebuilt before. I was just wondering what kind of machine work needs to be done to the block, I would like to go .030 over on the bore but that is about all I know about what I need. Also I know that all machine shops charge differently but what kind of price would be an upper limit to pay, in other words what would be too high a price to pay for the work? I don't know what is reasonable and what is a rip off. Thanks for your help.

I woud'nt want to say what machining needs to be done on your rebuild or what price is too high but-I can give you an idea of pricing.I just got my block back from the shop. This is one of the higher priced machine shops around but they do good work and do alot of racing motors.Boil block-$40 steam block after machining-$30 magnaflux block rods and caps $30. Sonic check block $45. Line hone mains for studs $98.Rebore special finish w/torque plate $145. Deck block minimum amount $88. Rebuild rods $88.Shot peen rods $24. Dissasemble pistons and rods $16.Reassemble $40.File fit rings $48.Install distributer bushing $10.Balance $175.Hazardous waste fee $10.Install cam bearings $30.
