More than likely the trans was replaced under warranty. The replacement trannys came with no I.D. numbers or vin's.The dealers were not required to do this.

I took a look at all my 4 spd trans (unfortunately, most are sitting on the floor of my shop and not in their cars) and found that from 68-72 they all have casting numbers on the driver's side tail shaft, inspection plate, and on the case itself. There was a pad with the VIN (not 68)on the passenger side. I've seen some cars that had EVERY number ground off the motor and trans (undoubtedly done by the same people who painted murals on their van and chromed their suspension) in an effort to "customize" their car. Hope that helps.

Would they have replaced the original 18 spline with a 23 spline for warranty? The 23 is what I currently have in it. I will also look on the tail shaft to see if that tells me anything. Thanks for the info and help!!!

There is no rule that says a 440 has a 18 spline 4-speed as factory equipment.I have 2 23 splines and a 18 spline.The 18 came out of a 68 Hemi Road Runner and the 23's came out of 69-70 440 Chargers.

I was under the impression that 440 HiPerformance 375 HP and 426 Hemis came with the course spline (18) and the other non HiPer motors came with a fine spline (23)??...

Hemi engines always came with 18 spline.440's it depends. Not all 375/440's had 18 spline trannys. Most did in 1970-71. 6pak cars are supposed to.I have used more 23 spline tranny's in racing and they are just as strong as the 18's as they really are the same for the most part.
