How difficult is it to change gears in an 8 1/4" rear end? Can I just get a new ring gear from the junkyard, or do I need to get the pinion gear too? What installation kits, references, etc. would be recommended to help actually swap the gears properly? How much would I expect to pay for a junkyard gears?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Junkyard gears are a waste of time & effort, you probably won't be able to reset them to your rear. Numerous "special" type tools will be required to do this job, not a good project for the "first timer"..........too much riding on the outcome.
But if you must, there must be books in the library on this subject. BB |

It is very hard to set up a ring gear without using the pinion that was run with the ring gear. Get ring & pinion as a set.
You will need a dial indicator, straight edge, shims, & maybe bearings. Alot of patients will also help. ------------------ 69 RR 426 4bbl 727 9.78 @ 138 best so far. 79 Lil Red Express. 96 2500 Ram 5.9 99 Durango 5.9 |
