Question

I am going to use the Mopar Performance aluminum water pump housing (and pump)on my 440 engine. Does this need a special alternator bracket? If so, which one and what does it look like?

My old HP Book "Big Block Mopar Engines" by Don Taylor says the aluminum housing needs a pre-1968 alternator bracket. My new HP Book, "Big Block Mopar Performance" by Chuck Senatore doesn't say anything about water pumps, aluminum or otherwise. The Mopar Performance catalog (1995) shows the aluminum water pump housing as P4286900 and lists an alternator bracket P2206445.

My aluminum water pump housing has a different number cast into it, 4286899. Everything on it looks just like my 1972 cast iron unit except the thermostat housing mounting service is a little higher and the Al pump housing has an extra threaded hole under the thermostat housing. Are the newer Al housings different than the mid 90's?

What do I need, and what does it look like?
I saw a 1965 set of brackets at: http://www.myitem.com/myimages/49/539194249.jpeg

Somebody correct me if I am wrong, but I think the newer alum. housings with the two threaded holes will work with either the early or late brackets. I think they lowered the thermostat and changed the alt. bracket in 67.

I'm pretty sure the altenator bracket is a Hemi bracket. (It's been a while...)
I've used the MP # and had no trouble every time.
I use a BB Corvette (YEAUKKK!) bottom rad hose. Works great!

The Mopar Performance web site, http://www.performanceparts.mopar.com/
says it now works with both old and new style.

I just mounted the alternator with the newer, 1972 brackets (small top, and bottom connects to engine mount) using the aluminum housing (bought 3/00) and the alternator lines up fine with the crank pulley groove closest to the damper.

My observations agree, but everytime I call the MP tech line, it is busy.

The new alluminum housings have provisions for early & late brackets. the older ones don't.
