I have a Dana 60 1/2 ton, 9 1/4 ring, 323 or 321 (sorry don't remember) gears, this axle is a limited slip with about 10,000 miles on the cluch pack. very solid axle, took out only to install 3/4 ton's. axle is complete with drums.

Rockhopper,
The rear you have (9 1/4" ring) is not a Dana 60. 1/2 ton Dodge trucks usually have either a 8 3/4 rear(pre 74), a 8 3/8, or a 9 1/4 Chrysler Corp. rear, and are semi-floating. The Dana 60 was used on 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks, and is of the full floating type. Dana 60's have a 9 3/4" ring gear. (the rear you are installing is a Dana 60) P.S. if you are replacing the rear in a 4wd truck, make SURE you are installing the same gear ratio in the rear, as is in the front axle. Otherwise, your transfer case will NOT live a long life. Also keep in mind that Dana 60 rears come with 3.54 or 4.10 gears most of the time. The highest gear available is the 3.54. The lowest is somewhere in the 6.38 or so range (maybe deeper). Good Luck! ------------------ Mike (440trk) [This message has been edited by 440trk (edited February 17, 2000).] |

Actually, and I hate to post this here, but the gear ratios just have to be close. My 84 Ramcharger has 3.23's in the Dana 44 front, and 3.21's in the 9 1/4 corporate rear axle. The Mopar Master Parts Manual actually list the ring and pinion set for the rear axle as part number 3837594, with the description of, Gear Set Package, 3.21, 3.23 Ratio. So it's hard to tell what you would get when ordering replacements also. this difference is slight, and my Ramcharger is an ex government vehicle and has over 300,000 miles. The front gears have never been touched, and I replaced the rear gears about 20,000 ago. This is a small point, but I've had people freak out on me when I tell them a 3.21 rear will work in their 4X4 with the 3.23 front gears.

some one posted the same message in the other section too the Axle is not here but all I know is I got it from a 84 Ram, the casing has the Dana logo stamped on it and the ring gear said 9 and I thaught 1/4 I may be rong I will check and find out this sunday but I don know it is a Dana and it is a 1/2 ton and it came out of the rear I don't recall ever seeing a Dana 44 in the rear of a full size truck. Ill double check though sorry about the mix up I should have checked befor posting I am working off meme. due to the fact that I'v had 3/4 ton's for two and a half years.

Elwenil,
You are absolutely correct about the gear ratios. The only reason I mentioned it, was because Rockhopper mentioned that his old gears were a 3.23 or a 3.21 ratio, and a 3/4 ton Dodge did not come with anything higher than 3.54. Putting a 3/4 ton 3.54/4.10 rear in a truck with a 3.21/3.23 front axle would not be a good idea. Rockhopper, The 9 1/4 rear you have, is not a Dana 44. It is a refered to as a 9 1/4. It is a Chrysler Corp. rear (Dana was partially owned by Chrysler for many years , and Dana made this differential (and others) for Chrysler...that's why you see the Dana symbol). Hope this helps. ------------------ Mike (440trk) |

Ok that would explane the Dana symble http://www.moparchat.com/ubb/redface.gif I am going to check this sunday on the ring gear size for shure but, I never said I was putting 3/4 ton rear with my 1/2 ton front. I have allready swaped out front and rear to 3/4 ton dana 44/60 4:10 axles about two years ago the front 1/2 ton is gone I have the rear (the axle in question) just sitting around If some one needs it I am willing to let it go cheep. I do know that It has a fresh cluch pack I made the place I bought the axle from replace the ones in it they were bad. thanks for the help I do appreciate it.
