My friend has a 64 dart with the original stock 273 and the original heads. He's looking for a little more performance and I suggested the newer 318 swirl ports casting 302 since these are relitivly inexpensive and he just wants to inprove his performance. we've had discussions on these but I need to know if these will fit his 64 motor. Is his an "A" wide block or will these fit and perform well for him.
Or am I so deep in the weeds I cant see over the top? Any input is appreciated..thanks...DAVE

64 273 block is an LA block and these 302's will fit fine. As long as his block isn't high comp four barrel magnum, in which case the piston top is above TDC and will hit t he head. But as long it is a stadard two barrel, they will be fine. Good Luck. comp will go up!

dont quote me on this, but i think the 84 273 had the oddball angled intake bolts, which means if it does, and you use the magnum heads, you have to use an intake to match those heads as the old 273 wont work. but then again, i think the magnum heads are using the oddball pattern again, but not sure if its the same pattern as the old 273. again, dont quote me on this.

There was no 'magnum 273' in '64, so the dome thing shouldn't be a problem. The 302's should be a bolt on, but the intake bolt angle is different. I would replace the stock 273 intake with a performer and a small Holley or Carter anyway. Maybe a very small MP hydraulic cam with the correct pushrods could be good too, and I would pay extra attention to the CR and mill the high swirls .060" to increase it slightly.
