I could use some advice, I'm stuck.
I am building a 510ci-RB motor, it didn't start
out that way, first it was going to be a 440
buildup, but things change.
My parts are as follows:
4.25 stroker crank
452 heads with flow #'s that are
lift: flow#:
.100 101
.200 166
.300 228
.400 260
.500 268
.600 274
.700 280
the heads are stage-lll ported w/2.14 & 1.81 valves.
Ross custom dome pistons: 10.0 or up to 12.0 c/r(i would need to machine them for whatever c/r i will use)
manifold: M/P M1 Single plane
cam: Racer Brown - STH-42 Hyd
(i bought it for the 440 build-up including spings and push rods)
lift 520
.050" duration 254
.008" duration 300
106 centerline intake
110 centerline exhaust
108 lobe seperation

carb: non yet
gears: non yet
torque conv: non yet

the car is a 65 Belvedere
weight aprox 3400lb
this car will be street driven to the local
cruise nites and an occasional run at the track
which is at 2700 ft above sea level. I'm not building a commuter to go to work with.
my questions are:
what c/r?
what carb do you think I should get?
what gears?
what size torque conv?
and what about the cam I have, do you think it will be o.k.?
thanks to all that reply

510" huh???? When things get outta hand they really get outta hand!!!! I love it!! Lets see what I can come up with on your combination. Compression ratio.....I would keep it as close to 10.0 to 1 as possible, even lower if you do not have pistons in hand yet. This monster is going to make GOBS of bottom end power so why risk detonation by running big c.r. numbers on the street. There is also the expense of buying $5.00 a gallon race gas just to cruise. On the carb., at least an 850 and likely one that has been masaged for more flow. Rear Gear.....3.55 or 3.73. Once again I site killer torque in this choice. You did not specify rear end type....ie 8 3/4 or Dana or 9". With this kind of cubes, I would lean toward the Dana or the 9" for reasons of brute strength. Torque convertor.....stay conservitive, with that much torque on tap a comvertor with a rated stall of 2400 may go up to 2800-3000. A good 11 inch convertor should do it. Contact your convertor manufacturer for thier advise. Now to the cam, you have a lot of duration at 50 there compared to lift. I like the looks of Dave Hughes' cams at Hughes engines. He has a couple of hyd. grinds that would be better for the street then the Racer Brown stick youve got in hand. Look for something around 550 lift at 235@.50 with a 108 to 110 seperation number. Good luck and keep us posted, this sounds like a real monster. The old hippie hisself

I agree with just about everything "the old hippie" has posted.I would go with a 4.10 gear, and a cam from somebody that has a dual pattern grind to it.This way you can bleed off some compression and run pump gas with no worries.I'm sure Hughes has a cam like this.Crane has one too in their "Commander" series.I'd also call UltraDyne also in Lousiana and see what they have.

OK guys, I've got to get in on this one too! I've been running an engine (w/4-speed) and 3.50 to 1 (9" rear) gear since '83. I had the engine built with a final compression ratio of about 9.7 to 1., because of the weasel p*ss they called gasoline back then! I can lug the thing in 4th gear @ 30 mph up hill and virtually never hear the slightest hint of "ping"/detonation. Now it's NOT a MOPAR so I can't say how a MOPAR will react, but if I were building that 510, I'd go 10 to 1 for the street, but no more, judging by what I've experienced. This way you won't have to be fussing with octane boosters/additives. Also for the street, I'd have to go with 3.50 to 1 final drive ratio. Again for the street, you can probably get away with an 8 3/4 unit, but definatly a Dana or 9" for any serious drag racing. My opinion is if you go with anything of a higher numerically ratio you can forget the carburator all together! Just plumb in a 1/2 line all the way from the tank and aim it directly into the intake-like what gas mileage! Otherwise, I'd go with an 850. If you're running and auto trans., I suggest a vacuum operated 2ndary unit. If you were basically going to race it, I'd go with a mechanical unit w/ either a 4-speed or moderate to hi-stall converter. I'll stay away from the cam bit as I don't wish to get into that area or we'll be here all afternoon! I think all the other info you've been given is generaly good sound advice.

Richard
