Quick question to all the gurus of Mopower !
I am at the mercy of the ignorance and BS of retailers here and would appreciate your expertise. Am currently using MP ignition with MP Chrome box & dist - thinking of upgrading to MSD 6AL / Holley Annihilator Strip / Accel 300 Plus / Crane Hi 6/7. Has anyone used these systems and how good were they compared to the MP system ? I suppose criteria would include: adjustability, reliability, output, ease of fitting. Car is street/strip tubbed A body, nat asp 360, 727, 9" (sorry guys, easier to get parts for in OZ). There is a possibility that the engine will be blown in the future, so I need (if required) a system capable of firing through higher cyl pressures to allow for that possible change. Any info would be invaluable. |

My thinking is this. Does it work fine right now? If so leave it alone till the NEED for an improvement dictates it, not the desire. If it isn't working for you as is then upgrade.
Some people will swear the MSD type ignition will pull more power out of an otherwise fine combo even if the previous igniton seemed to be working properly. I do know that in turbo MoPar FWD apps it doesn't help, in fact the stock ignition works as well as any of the aftermarket systems, in some cases better. My thoughts are unless you are experiencing a problem why change. Only advantage to an MSD type of system if you are fouling plugs at low rpm, then the MSD type of system will help mask the problem. I have used both and have seen only very small changes from MOPAR to MSD and not worth the dollars spent for the MSD. At the track MSD was only good for a tenth and 1/2 mph at best. Currently run just chrome box and a Accel coil.

I changed from the MP Chrome to MSD in my drag car. Couldn't believe how much easier it started. Would never go back. Box is six years old and no probs.

Had both and couldn't tell one from the other. Currently using the chrome. I expected more from the MSD.

OZCHARGA, I have only used the MSD-6AL on the race cars, and have had no problems so far (4 Yrs). I went with MSD for the over rev protection and 2 step, which makes it so easy to change launch rpm.
The 66 belv has MP tach drive dist & 69 RR has MSD billet dist, but both have MSD-6AL Hope this helps. Regards, ------------------ Cameron's Racing Division of GOTNUTZ? We use the Mopar "Gold Box" and it works great.

I went from an orange-box with MP breakerless dist to using the MP system that is made by MSD. I did not notice any performance gain but it did help the idle and low speed plug fouling a great deal. Oh it is an overcammed-overcarburated 440. hope this helps... beeper

Thanks for all the replies guys. It seems that the MSD is king over there ! I'd think that it would make a good street/strip ign if it works so well at keeping the plugs clean. As mentioned previously, will probably stick with Chrome Box till engine gets supercharged (if ever!). Catch ya on the flip side.....

When you put in the MSD 6AL with the billet distributer to match, the Mopar system gets put on the shelf right? The box is no longer needed? Ill tell you one thing there sure is a difference between the orange box and say the standard box. I broke down cause the orange box(after about 4 yrs of service) went bad. It would cause the engine to loose spark after it got hot. I put in a box from Auto Zone made by "Wells". I noticed a big difference, you have to bring the timing way back for the engine to run right. Take care fellas.
