Question

I just bout a mint 76 360 hi pref Duster... -told the car is somewhat rare any idea?- The car is in beautiful shape with all the orig eqipment from the radio, owners guide right to the wheels... at any rate The car has this unknowen solid cam.. the engine and tranny where prof rebuilt but the owner was knowledgeable and choose the wrong cam combo... the car idles at 1400 rpms sounds like it belongs at the track and when put in drive sputters and cuts out... I want to go to a fairly hot streetable hyd. cam. The car has a 600cfm carter 4bbl, 2500rpm stall, ported polished heads, bigger valves, headers, electric fuel pump in it -gears unknowen at the point pick the car up on monday- I want a cam with good low end excellent mid range and good high end power... Comp. Cams hi-energy -dont remember lift and dur.- promised these factors and needed a 2200 stall..... any other recomendations on what to look at other cams? better ideas? I want a mean little street machine with ome idle quality but that is still good as a daily driver...

Thanks
Corey

Hummm, sounds like the idle circut on the carb is too lean. The carb is probably a "general purpose" carb and sounds like it needs a "performance or race carb". Anyway, to answer the question, I would use the MP 484" hydralic. I ran one of these for years in a 360 F body and loved it. Lots of torque and fantastic pull thru 6,000 rpm. Be sure to degree it in, this is a must! If you want something a little milder, go with the MP .471"/474" hydralic. Or if you want to use the Comp Cams, I would pick one of the Magnum series. The 270H(20-214-4) is a .470" lift, 270 duration(224 @ .050") and the 280h(20-232-2) is a .480 lift, 280 duration(230@ .050"). These cams(either Comp Cams or the Mopar Performance) are for if you want a strong motor and a lumpy idle but still have power brakes and good drivability(provided it is tuned correctly-poor tuning will make it miserable). Also, I would definately use a dual plane intake on this motor, either the MP M1 DP, Edelbrock RPM or Weiand Stealth. Single plane intakes will destroy the low end performance.

If it were me I'd use the Mopar 280 cam in this car.But I will say one thing...a 76 360 Duster is a rare and desirible car.Restore it to NOS factory condition!!!
