What cam should i use for my street/strip 70 383 challenger. I dont know much about the motor as i did not build it . Heres what i do know, it has stock unported 516 heads, its a 70 block, its been bored .030 over, it has a performer rpm intake( by the way , with this intake being a high-rise, if i had a shaker hood would it make the shaker scoop hit the hood?) , a holley 650, headers, 3.23 rear end gears, and its an automotic car.
When i start restoring the car in March, i am going switch to a 3.91 rear end, port and polish the heads myself with the MP templates, and get new 1 7/8 ceramic coated headers( any suggestion on what brand headers? I dont want to have to dent them or anything to clear the plugs) . I was thinking the hughes 3844 cam( i cant remember the specs on it right now). This car will still be my daily driver after i restore it so nothing too radical. Later on this summer i will add some 1.5 ratio roller rockers and maybe some new heads.
A few more things, About how much do you think this car weighs, Its basically stock except for the things above .
Do you guys know of any companies that make or could get me a shaker hood?
And , how do i make my own website like for the Mopar webring and things like that, i would like to make a site about my restoration as i go through it since i just got a new computer and a digital camera.
Thank you very much, and i hope i get more responses than i usually do(i only got one reply on my last post).

Cool

I have a 383 Dart that I drive on the street and plan on taking to track once in awhile. I use the MP 484-284 cam and I love it . I know that you can get more modern grinds but I like the slight lope in the Idle and it runs great. I use a 3000 stal TA and 3.91 gears. I got it for a real good price but I would not use a stock convertor with it if you use that cam. Good luck with whatever you choose !

To give any real advice on cam selection we need to know what your current cam is and cranking compression. When you go into your heads make sure they have 1.74 exh valves in them as 516's have 1.60 exh valves.Dynomax headers with Hi temp coating will work well for you, also consider a 2500 stall converter,Alabama Torque converters make one for $189,your car should weigh around 3450lbs and yes somebody makes a fiberglass repro shaker, call Year One for info........PRO........

Like i said before, i do not know the cam specs, compression ratio and what converter it has, since i didn't build the car and i havent taken it apart to look at it yet. Ill find out the cranking compression for you guys tomorrow though.
PRO, a stock 70 challenger weighs 3450 lbs?! It cant be that light, its all metal, really the only things that make it lighter are the intake and headers. I was also planning on getting the bigger valves in the heads i just failed to mention it.

I think that a 3844 is a good cam, But it would make quite a radical 383(but maybe that's what your lookin for)

IMO, the absolute hands-down best street/some strip hydraulic grind for a 383 (or a 340 for that matter)is the UltraDyne 231/239@.050, .480/.504 on 108 lobe Centers. Due to their Unsymmetrical (fast open, slow close) ramps they make great torque down low, great power up high. Nasty lick @ idle, like a 484 but the U/D pulls more vaccuum and has better top end power. The 484 and 509 are great cams, but they were originally designed (by Racer Brown) primarily as bracket cams with open headers.

The 3844 Hughes is a great stick But IMO puts the powerband up too high for a 3500-3800 lb 383 but it's about the perfect cam for a similar spec 440.

With a 383 it is very easy to loose more bottom end than you gain on the top, definately not what you want to do with an automatic. You got to (more or less) cam it and gear it the way you would a small block.

I also have a 383 Dart that is driven (everyday) on the street. It has the .484 MP cam . It sounds pretty nasty with the 2-chamber Flowmasters. The car has gone 12.89 whith open headers

Default making a website is easy

You can get free web hosting in a variety of places. Try www.geocities.com they give you 15 megs of space and they have a basic page building program thats easy to use so you don't need to learn HTML coding. I'm currently working on a Mopar site, it's not finished yet but here's a sample...
