Don't know if I want to invest in building the rearend currently in the car. I'm hoping to go high 11's once I get a gear, then putting on a 250 HP Cheater system, which I'm thinking will go beyond the limitations w/ this rear. I have a 9" that needs to be rebuilt, too. The only added cost would be shortening the housing - everything else that would be done to it would also be done to the 8 3/4".

The car is around 3600# w/ me and an automatic so power transfer isn't too violent.

High 13's on really crappy days - Quick enough for a daily driver... NOT!

I run a 8-3/4 with spool & M/E axles for 4 seasons. Changed gears once. 69 Road Runner ran 11.50s to 11.06 car 3500# with driver. Foot brake car no trans brake.

We changed engines and ran 9.74 @ 138, car now 3000# with driver. Still using same 8-3/4
just changed gears again.

Have seen alot of 8-3/4 break when used with trans brake.

Good luck with yours

Regards,

Better than the Ferd 9" and the Chuvit 12 bolt... The only better car rear is the (mopar)Dana 60..

You ain't gonna break the rear. The gears are a different story... just buy good gears.

The biggest problem with the 8 3/4 is the lack of pro gears. The only set available is the 4.86 for the 742 housing. We've broken 4 sets of street gears (5.13's) with our transbrake equipped car. We installed the 4.86's expecting the car to slow down, but it didn't.

Both the 8 3/4 and the 9" need a back brace. Without it the rearend has a tendency to bow forward. We made ours with 1/4" plate in a ---+--- pattern.

The latest issue of Hot Rod magazine has a good article on rears, all kinds, not just Mopar. It was interesting enough for me to buy a copy, not just glance at it at the newsstand. They say a stock 8-3/4 is good to 500 hp. The way the story was written, they seem to be more concerned about an axle shaft actually breaking more than anything else.
