This is the dodge coronet coupe with 23,000 original miles. It runs as new but drips about 2 drops of oil from the
rear main seal every time I park it.
Do both halves of the seal have to be replaced usually or is the bottom half most likely
the culprit?
As a supermodel I hate the thought of having to drop the tranny and disconnect all the linkage
and the torque converter. It might ruin my nails.ha ha!

You don't have to drop the trans. to change the rear seal.You do,however,have to drop the oil pan. If you get it off,the seal can be changed in the car,the new one should have a small plastic "shoehorn" to help rotate the new seal up around the crank.Those skinny supermodel arms should easily slip up into the tight confines you'll find there.

A 1951 coronet uses a "rope seal"its all one piece if its original,and it will be a bear to get it out,if you ever saw one installed youd believe me,now youll need an assortment of small picks and small needlenose pliers and a large assortment of patience,its not hard but it is time consuming,youll just keep picking away at it pulling it out,eventually you wont be able to reach whats left in the topside,then take a piece of brass welding rod and bend it so that it goes somewhat around the top half in order to drive it out,...........PRO.......

Oh yeah on installation uses a small amount of "The Right Stuff" sealant on the outer edges of the new seal and on the mating point of the 2 halves,also dont align the mating halves of the seal exactly with the main cap halves,slightly offset them,otherwise it will leak.....PRO...

Default rear mainseal replace

Dear PRO and MOPARKING;
In looking through my 51 Dodge manual, it shows a two piece rear main seal and suggests
leaving the main seal locating screws loose until the main bearing cap has been torqued.
Is it better to overlap the top or bottom half of the seal over the main cap joint?
You guys are great thanks for the help.
You can see the car at http://knowitall.websitegalaxy.com/wsnCB56.html

What a beautiful ride! You sure managed a fantastic score with that one. Good luck changing your seal. Does your husband help with the wrenches or are you the mechanically inclined one in the family?

Great web site, I take it you're a professional photographer?
