I have a '71 Charger w/ the original 440 and console shifted automatic. The engine needs to be rebuilt. I may be able to get a '76 440 and tranny. What problems would I encounter:
1) Mating the '76 440 to the '71 tranny. I think the '71 440 is internally balanced and the '76 externally balanced. 2) Putting the whole '76 440 and tranny in. The 76 tranny was column shift, would it hook up to the console shifter okay? Would the driveshaft already in the car work with the '76 equipment? I only want to do this so I can drive the car while I rebuild the original engine (it it's rebuildable!) Thanks for your help. |

Yes on question 1 and 2.You could also use your current trans and torque converter by using B&M flex plate #10237.P.A.W. lists them for $72.95.It is balanced.Or if the 76 setup came with the torque converter just use that with the new motor and your old tranny.

This should be no problem. The 76 tranny may not have the provision for the column shifter bracket. If it doesn't use the tranny in the car and the 76 converter. The other thing is the intake is a spread bore so you would likely want to use the 71 intake. You might have to use the 71 water pump housing depending on which side the outlet is on. It should be a simple swap.
