I hear the starter from a Mitsu motor fits an LA. What model starter or application? Is it smaller? More torque? I have limited space down there, and dont want to spend the dough on a Tilton or a mini starter. Thanks

the starter from the newer Rams and Dakota v-6
and v-8 is the same as the MP Mini starter.
I believe you want a 96 or newer starter.

The new Denso starters go back to about 1989 or 1990. No, the FWD ones won't work

There are two different models of the Denso 'mini' starters, The first one came in about '88, the second in around '96 that is even smaller than the first ministarter. Both are made by Denso, they are shorter than the Mopar starters and way lighter. They are also way more powerful. The small size may be deceiving because at some points they are bigger than the Mopar starters and may not fit in to all applications. This is because, the Motor and the Solenoid are side by side, pretty much like in the Mopar starter, but the solenoid is next to block and the motor is outside.

So wich one would fit a 340/904 combo? Or Is the solenoid on the wrong side (no chance of working), or can the solenoid be moved (electric link or mechanical link?) You say it is more torque, that is what Im looking for.

Pishta,

I just last weekend did this swap on my 440. I went and bought a remanufactured starter for a 99 Ram V8 (at least, that's what I told the counter guy). The best part was that he took my old starter and no core charge. Anyway, the terminals on the new starter are a little different. There was a set of terminals on the starter, then there was a plastic bracket that bolted on to them. On this bracket there was another set of terminals. Presumably, the smallblocks need this bracket for everything to reach. It caused interference on my RB, so I removed the bracket and the starter slipped right in. The terminals are close to the block, so I had to put the wires on before installing the starter. After that, it was too easy. You'd be amazed how much smaller and lighter the new starters are.

Mike

What was the coin on that '99 starter? They are getting 150 for a Mopar Mini.

check Koller Dodge in Naperville IL Not sure the price but cheaper than Jegs and Summit. get the MP unit or a late model ram. Same thing. Worked great with my 360 and headers. No need to loosen the headers. The adapter is nice because it seperates the hot and solinoid wires apart.

Pishta,

I bought the remanufactured one for $80. A new one would be around $110, including your core. Without a core, it's$150. Go figure...

Man, this starter spins FAST. I am so happy I did that swap.

Good luck,

Mike

Default Hey Pishta

I tried the Ram starter on my 360/904 combo and it did not fit. I have a new LA 360 SB (from Mopar Perf.) and part of the pan rail on the back of the motor prevented the starter from seating all the way into the tranny.

I know the blocks are different especially on the driver's side. They also have the extra pad mount for the later trucks and this interfered with my headers.

I bought the starter for $79 + core. but had to return it.

Koller Dodge wants 109 plus shipping for a new one without a core. I am not sure what shipping costs but it is the best deal for a new one. I had it on a old style 360 and now my Magnum 360 without a problem. I can remove it without loosening the headers (Hooker Super Comp 1 3/4)

Default Think used!

Folks, don't forget that people wreck their stuff all the time -- i got one off a '96 or so for less than $50 and it is not rebuilt -- check your local late model salvage yard (not one that caters to early model stuff only). My friends and I have had bad luck with reman starters in general and good luck with OEM used ones -- one time a friend had put 4 reman starters on his Cordoba, and the one on there was giving him trouble. I gave him one off a '65 Dart 273...it worked for years--at least through the sale of the car to someone else. Besides, used is cheaper.

Starter motor brushes cost $5 to change for the do-it yourselfer. Clean up starter with "paint thinner " repaint with gloss black Rustolium. I like used starters.
