Question

I have a friend of mine who gave me a 850 Carter 4bbl. Is there any way to use this carb on my 318 powered Diplomat? I would imagine I would have to jet the carb down a lot. What about using 360 heads to improve flow? I hate to have to buy a carb when i have a perfectly good one right here for free!!

850 Carter??? Thats the biggest Carter I have ever heard of. Seriously, it is either a 750 or a 600/625 (500...) Of course Im talking AFB, not Thermoquad, usually refered to as such on this board. If Thermoquad, the primaries are so small that it'll probably work. It doesnt have enough motor to open the secondaries all the way to 850 CFM. Jetting down wont help, that is not a CFM function, but rather a rich/lean variable. Changing heads to use a carb is akin to pushing a rope. You have to consider the whole package. Those TQ's are getting lots of attention on Ebay, may want to sell it and get yourself a 625 AFB/Edelbrock. Easier to work with and alot more support.

Neonhomer:
The carb you have might be one of the new Edlebrock 850 Performer carbs. (real new)
I would not use that carb on a street 318 as the primaries are large and throttle response will suffer as compared to a smaller 600-650 version.
However, If you insist on using it, you will mostlikely have to put in a larger jet/smaller rod combination in the primaries.

Like Pishta said, you first need to be sure what it is before using it.

Default 850

More than likely it's a older Thermo-Quad,and when set up will work fine on the 318.

IF ITS THE TQ USE IT, KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON IT THOUGH, THEY ARE KNOWN FOR THERE WARPED AND OR CRACKED MAIN BODIES(ie. FUEL LEAK!!) ALSO MAKE SURE IF IT IS A TQ THAT YOU HAVE A SPREAD BORE MANIFOLD OR AN ADAPTER. ONE MORE NOTE, EDELBROCKS NEWEST CARB IS 800 CFM NOT 850.
