I'm like most other racers, on a tight budget, i would like to cut out the inners of my hood on my 70 Duster and add a glass six pack scoop. I would then pin it down with dzus fasteners ect.. . has anyone cut out the underside of their hood for weight savings? I know i will probably need to add some stiffeners but how much weight can be saved. Thanks all. Motor

I have, about half the weight is saved. Leave the outer edges to the hood so you don't need to reinforce it. Otherwise it will live and need a lot of pins.

Have done the same thing, agree on weight savings, but my advice would be to keep the hinges without the springs, and make a little hold up bar, I know from experience that raising a hood is a lot handier than taking them on and off.

My thoughts exactly DartGT about leaving the edges. I'll experiment with the hinge idea 64 Savoy, thanks for the ideas. motor

Hood
this is just a problem that I solved on my K-car. The hoods are made up of two parts. If you are going to race this car, grind the spot welds on the edges of the hood and separate the two parts, then roll the edges under, cut a hole out of the hood and insert scoop from bottom pop rivet and do body work and paint.By doing it this way you loose about 3/4 original weight But you must put a hood pin front center as hood will bow at high speed

Ive done it also,I delete the hinges entirely and bolt 4 pieces of angle 1" wide at each corner ,then drill a hole in each and bolt hood pins to them, its way lighter than hinges and is light enough to lift off your self and makes working on anything under the hood more visible and easier to get to............PRO........
