Question

I will be replacing the stock cam in my '68 RR's 383. Will be going with either the 280/280 or 284/284 Mopar cam.
The car has 102,000 miles on it. Never been rebuilt, heads never been off the car.
Whatelse should I replace besides the cam, lifters and springs?
Don't want to have to do it more than once, have never done it before.
Thanks, Gary

You might want to do a valve job on the heads when you pull them off.If your 'Bird is stock,I'd go with the 280 Mopar cam.I have it in my 70 Road Runner with 383 and it works very well.

You also might want to template port your heads which is basically opening up the bowls. With a good three angle valve job and you will be all set.

While your at it do yourself a favor, install a new timing chain and gear set. The old ones will be stretched. You should also degree in the new cam.
Don't forget to break-in the cam properly, and keep the pushrod's in order if reusing the old one's.

Later,
Jeff C.

I agree with the maniac
replace the timeing chain and Nylon gear. Especially if you have a stick or a good tall stall speed converter. I wouldnt port the heads if they are original. You will never get another set with those numbers again. But getting another set and porting them..great idea!!!!id do it

Make sure they measure the valve guide clearance also. Install the best seals. Like you said, you don't want to do it twice. Sometimes they don't check the valve guides properly, and they say they are okay. Then you get oil fouling up your mixture. I did have to do this twice, because the guy just wiggled the valves and said they were fine, but they weren't.

Hold on there DannyC. Where do you see in my post that I have no sense. Do I know you?

I asked a question about replacing a cam and you imply I'm stupid. We all gotta start somewhere and this will be my first attempt so I asked for help before I put the car back together instead of after. That doesn't sound sensless to me.

I hope all your replies aren't so "helpful".

Just ignore DannyC. I think he's a Chebby guy and he's lost. I see he made a stupid comment on another post. This is the best place to get advice and opinions because there is over 3000 people on here. I wish This site was here when I started, I wouldn't have made to many bad combos while learning. I think all the replies are good.
I would definatly port the heads and get a good valve job.
