HAVE 70 DUSTER W/73 340, SMALL CAM,HEADERS.
I CANT GET IT TO COOL. RUNS 190F DURING NORMAL DRIVING AND IF YOU STOP AT A LIGHT CLIMBS TO OVER 215F. PUT IN NEW 3 ROW RADIATOR,THERMOSTAT (180) CHECKED DWELL, TIMING ETC BUT NO HELP. COULD A LACK OF BACK PRESSURE BE THE PROBLEM? EXHAUST IS FREE FLOW. IM TIRED OF THROWING PARTS AT IT, NEED SOME PRO TO SET ME STRAIGHT. |

Sorry it's so long...
It might sound stupid, but did you check to make sure the water-pump was working? Check the easy things first. Make sure that coolant is flowing after the t-stat opens, could be a defective t-stat, weak water-pump, radiator hose collapsing from the water-pump pressures (lower hose most common), what mixture of anti-freeze are you running? It should be 50/50 max, could be a bad radiator cap. Remove cap with engine off and cold, start engine and watch coolant, should not be moving, let coolant heat up, coolant should start flowing when t-stat opens. If it never flows, or very little flow think t-stat or water-pump. If it flows well, install cap. Bring engine RPM up to about 2000-2500rpm and look at hoses, (mainly lower) see if the water pump tries to "suck" it closed. If so, install hose with internal spring. If not, try the cheapest fix, and try replacing the radiator cap. Later, Jeff C. |

I put a 7 blade Imperial fan with viscous clutch on my 273 2 core 340 motor. Works great. I had to physically cut the blades down about 1 inch each to clear the upper hose and trans lines, but it pulls TONS of air. Also, could you be running lean at idle? that would not help the cooling. Might want to try a shroud.

I am with Pishta on the running lean issue. I ahd the same problem with my 383 and couldnt igure it out changed the jets in the holley and it quit overheating overnight.
I went from 66 to 76 I think its rich now but atleast it doesnt overheat. Christian ------------------ 68 'Cuda 383 Formula S recreation Working on adding EFI 69 'Cuda Race Parts Car 76 Duster 273 recent transplant 95 Neon 2.0 SOHC best of 16.96 84 Dodge Ram D50 transplanting 360 |
