i cant get a 1970 383 to run properly.itfires through the
exhaust on several cylinders and tends to caugh
through the carb once in a while.it does this no matter where i put the dist.im running pionts, fresh timing set,
fresh cam,new gaskets, pulled heads down and
completely diassembled cleaned and lapped in valves.
no real head work, just a real good cleaning.i pulled down the dist, cleaned and made sure the weights were
freed, new points set at 19thousandths.double checked
timing marks were set correctly. thanks for any info

Sounds like your points are too wide. Set them with a dwell meter to 29.
No power either? Can't get out of the driveway? Have to feather the exhaust?

Not wanting to overlook the obvious, have you confirmed that the wires were put back on, the distributor, in the right firing order?

An incorrect firing order would give those indications.

It may sound dumb but I have put the plug wires on wrong before. That pesky backfire, hmmm. Also does it do it during idle or acceleration.

Dave, just a thought.
Did you replace the plug wires? If so did you wire the cap in the correct rotation? I belive it is a counter clockwise rotation.

Hope you find problem real soon

i had the same problem last week, i finised putting in a hemi cam in my 71 383 and went to crank it and had the same problems. I turned the motor over so long i thought that i would have ruined the cam. also the starter solenoid started sticking , leaving the motor turning with the key off. but after hours of frustration and double checking (like you have) i looked closely at the distributor and the wiring and found out that it was firing on 2 instead of 1 , they are right by each other . i could swear that the rotor was pointing to 1 but it was not altho very close. after i moved the distributor it hit right off. so be extra careful about where the rotor is pointing and dont forget the rotation is counter clockwise as previously mentioned. good luck

I had a similar problem once. It turned out my distributor was worn out & the points weren't opening. It ran (if you can call it that) just the way you described.
