Hi all..Im looking to install a 8 point bar in my Cuda...I called around looking for someone to do it...I called Mullis Racecars(local to me)..whew, they want 1800 bucks....that would be about 200 bucks for materials, the rest labor. if they ran 100 bucks an hour shop rate, it would still be 16 hours labor...seems long to me. I was debating on doing it myself( I can mig weld good). What did you do?...

Way too much money for what they want. If you can mig weld, then do it yourself.Even if you buy a kit, your bucks ahead. It will take some time, but the results are worth the effort.2 guys here charge about $100.00 a point for a roll bar/cage,including materials,so if you do yours good enough, you may get some people that want you to install one in their cars.Good way to make some cash.

I had a guy put a Chris Alston 8-point kit in my Dart a couple years ago, and I think he charged me $500. That included the kit, a swing-out door bar, shipping, and the gussets in the floor to weld to. The full interior was still in the car, and it came back with NO burn marks in it!

The price Mullis quoted you was most likely for Moly tubing. That stuff costs around $8 a foot, is much harder to work with and has to be tig welded wich takes about 3 times longer.
Going rate at most chassis shops is around the $100 a point that most people have said on here. I do them a little cheaper, usually around $600 for a roll bar if I dont have to work around the interior. It may sound expensive, but, if you were in business to make a living at it, you would have to charge for your time and equipment and shop space. Doing it full time, a $300 welder doesnt last long, the $25 tubing notcher would last about 5 minutes, the $250 tubing bender just doesnt cut it for production work and the dust and mess from the chop saw is a pain. Even at $35 an hour for labor, you take out all the over head and expense, the guy is probably making about $12 an hour. |

CD how fast are you going? I think (could be wrong) NHRA wants a 10 point for cars that run 10.99 or better.
Just didnt want you to have to do it twice, in case you are going that fast. Jim |

That is right, at 10:99 you have to have a cage instead of a rollbar, and a window net.

I THINK YOU GUYS ARE WRONG. YOU CAN RUN TENS WITH AN EIGHT POINT ROOL BAR AS LONG AS THE FIREWALL IS IN THE STOCK LOCATION AND THE CAR IS NOT BACK HALVED,WHEEL TUBS ARE PERMITTED. I CANT SEEM TO FIND MY 2000 RULE BOOK TO BACK THAT UP BUT I WILL LOOK FOR IT AND IF ANYONE ELSE HAS ONE THEY COULD LOOK ALSO.

I FOUND THE RULE BOOK. IT SAY'S "ROLL CAGE MANDATORY IN CARS RUNNING 10.99 OR QUICKER OR ANY CAR EXCEEDING 135 MPH. BUT, FULL BODIED CARS , WITH UNALTERED FIREWALL, FLOOR AND BODYPAN , (WHEELTUBS PERMITED),RUNING BETWEEN 10.00 AND 10.99 A ROLLBAR IS PERMITED."

JandJ has it right, you can run all the way to 10.0 with a roll bar as long as the floor pan and firewall are unaltered.

That's right, as long as your firewall is unaltered you can run a bar if your not any quicker than 10's. CD, I just had two quotes for a cage, $600 and $800. I plan on 9's with nitrous. I don't know why they are charging you so much, maybe they heard what you were charging for machine work! Just Kidding!
