A recent thread on TTi headers just about has me convinced to take the plunge and get a set for my 451 stroker powered '69 Charger.
The big question is: What size? The Charger has 10:1 compression, what I believe is a stock cam grind, stock 906 heads and will be running a Edelbrock 750 on a Weiand Stealth intake. Exhaust is 2 1/2". Car will see the strip only occasionally. Do I stay conservative and use the 1 3/4" or step up to the 1 7/8"? Price is the same. I'm leaning towards the 1 7/8", but I'm not sure how well they will work with the 2 1/2" exhaust. Seems they may be better suited for a 3" system. On the other hand, the 1 7/8" headers would leave me a little room to grow should I decide to make some future mods. The only drawback I can think of on the 1 7/8" would be they might cost me a little low end torque. With 451 cubic inches though, I wouldn't think it would be missed. Opinions please. TIA |

Deifinetely go for the 1 7/8. It leaves you plenty of room to grow with it--besides--you pretty much answered your own question when you said they were the same price.
I would recommend a bigger carb though. At least 800cfm with vacuum secondaries. Any time you uncork your exhaust, you really should balance it out with higher intake volume. Otherwise, you aren't taking full advantage of the high exhaust flow. Your torque worries are unfounded. A 451" stroker motor will have more than adequate torque in you application. |

carb upgrade
I haven't installed the 750 carb yet. Still running a (slightly leaky) 440 spec AVS. My original intent was to go with the Edelbrock 800, but that extra 50 cfm is expensive (no used ones on Ebay yet). I was able to pick up a 750 relatively cheap and I'll try it for a while. If I find I'm wheezing on the top end, I'll get the 800. I have a feeling I'm going to need a little more fuel pump capacity as well. A Carter street/strip pump is probably in my future.
I will go with the 1 7/8" TTi's though. I just needed an independent opinion or two to confirm my feeling. |

Depends on the rear gearing....3.55 and lower numerically use the 1 3/4. 3.91 and higher numerically, use the 1 7/8.

If 4 spd w/deeper(3.91 0r better)gears or auto w/stall(3500) and deeper gears go 1.875 all others will work better with 1.75.........PRO....

Well, my experience was...
that 1.75" tubes were good enough to put my 440 Challenger into the low-to-mid 12s w/ a fairly mild combination. I didn't bother to switch to 1.875" headers until I stepped up the combination and put the car into the 10.9 to 11.0 range. IMO, unless you _know_ you're going to make some significant changes that will benefit from using the larger headers, I'd say run the smaller 1.75" tubes. Just like with cams, I think too many people use bigger headers than they really need.
