I have a 73 duster that came with the 7 1/4 rear end originally. my research says that there were no 8 3/4 diffs done for this year. i put a V8 into the car, and Im looking to get the larger bolt pattern and gears into the car. it's going to be a cruiser with light racing. will the 8 1/4 do me right, or do i need to find and modify the 8.75? If I have to modify it, what all do I need to do, and what's a ball park figure of what I am looking at cost wise?

It depends on how much power your V8 is going to make. I'd say anything under 350hp would be safe with the 8 1/4. To get an 8 1/4, you have to find a '73-'76 Duster, Dart, Scamp or Valiant with (more than likely) front discs and a V8. now, look on the ends of the axles. If they look different than your 7 1/4's shafts, and they have 1/2" lugnuts, you've got an 8 1/4. Should cost you $30+$400 for a new ltd-slip+a few more $$$ for the gear ratio you want.
An 8 3/4 would cost you $150 for the housing/pumpkin (unless you find one in the yard) $300 for new axle shafts (big bolt pattern) $400 for a ltd slip, and a few more for the gear you want. I'd stick with the 8 1/4 unless you are building an engine over 350hp, or you are putting in a big block. |

Keeb an eye out for wrecked Pathfinders, too. I read somewhere they had leaf-sprung DAna 44s out back that are the right width for A-bodies.
