I am about to aquire a 1987 Daytona that I plan on making rear wheel drive and turning into a drag only car.
I know how to build the motor up and plan on running nitrous. However, since I have never build a high horsepower engine for racing before and I know that the small blocks have bad head flow.I would appreciate any advice on the best heads to use.I would like to put as many horses into it as possible with keeping a production block.Any advice on which year of a block to best use would help also.I have thought about maybe a late 80's block that comes stock with hydraulic roller cam but will use a solid roller instead. All advice would be very helpful. |

Small Block
It all depends on what you consider bad flow. I have a set of very mild w2 heads on a 343 in stock block with nitrous and a solid cam. In a 3400# a body street car with no traction, it went low 10s and 135mph passes wit a lot of tuning left. The new model block is junk, you need an old 340 or pre 74 360 block. What are you wanting to run? I have aluminum rods and a stock crank, but have a r block for my next motor. If it was me, I would try and wait for a new block, because at the hp that I am at, I am at the verge of explosion, and the cost of two half way motors can be more than one proper piece. Just my .02

I appreciate your advice Bugeye. I would like to go as fast as possible with max stroke and bore.I have concidered the R block but am not sure if the extra money would be worth the little racing I would do.I may try to find someone that has one that is no longer used.Such as someone that has upgraded to a big block.
The R block I know would do wonders. As far as finding an older 340 block.Well, I do not think I could in my area.Older 360's however are very easy for me to come by.I used to work at a local salvage yard and am in good with most of them in the area.So coming up with block numbers and taking some time digging I should not have a prob with getting one.My biggest worry for the block is the fact I would like to run somewhere around 13:1 compression.Do you think an older block can handle that? |

Old Block
I have about a 13 to 1 compression in mine, and it is still holding (for now). I would not go with that high of a cr with n2o again though, I would stick with around 11 to 1 if I were you because you dont have to run such a dome. I would definately run aluminum rods though. Childs and Alberts makes a decent strong rod, but stay away from the BME 265 forgings, because I have seen a brand new 400+ inch a engine break a rod. both bolts were still in it too. Those rods are designed for comp eliminator engines(I think), that have light parts and high rpms.
