I use Valvoline 50 in my 273. The engine has had no crank work ever as it is still standard on all journals.

Castrol 5/50 Synthetic in my 440. Will be going to 20/50 or straight 50, still Synthetic, because the block is filled to the top. Only coolant, runs through the heads. They stay fine, but the oil heats to much in the later rounds.

Thumbs up

i ran MOBIL 1 syn. 10w/30 for about 7 years and had no problems. last fall i removed the engine to install a stouter shortblock, removed 1 main & 1 rod cap to check the wear on the bearings everything looked good. this oil is expensive though, but you won't have the viscosity problems you have with natural grade oil.

I have a good luck with CASTROL 20/50. Engine tear downs are good , engine stays clean with very little wear and no piston scuffing. Besides I like John Force.

Smile 11+ years on this kind of oil and filter.

Castrol GTX 20w-50 in the 214,000 mile 225 Slant Six daily driver and bracket racer.

Castrol GTX 10w-40 in the rebearinged and reringed 360-4 in my '79 Aspen R/T street racer / bracket racer.

Fram PH-8A filters in both.

No oil problems ever.

Someone else on another thread had commented about Fram filters being no good. Why? they've worked very well for me.

I read a filter comparison and Fram was one of the lowest. I wish I still had that link. Mobil 1 was the highest. KN wasn't tested.

Question

Hmmmm.......... I might have to reconsider my filter choices. Maybe a Purolator Premium. I had no idea Fram had gotten so bad, I know they used to be very good. No matter how good they are, I won't ever use a:

AC Delco, because that's Generic Motors.
Motorcraft, because that's Phord.
Pennzoil or Quaker State, because I've heard bad things about their oils.
Wix, because the name sounds cheap.

I'll have to go back and reread the report when I have more time someday.

Most of these motors were designed in an era where the oil sucked so bad that 100k miles on a UN abused engine meant the motor was DONE...The oiling on most engines was OVER designed...and with todays oils...they can last almost forever IF you change the oil regularly..

Cool

I worked with three major companies that used what is considered diesel oil in every engine they had from cummins to chevrolets to brigs and strattons. the best oil was Shell Rotella 15 W 40. It is designed to wistand extreme heat, pressure and just anything you can put on it. Most of the autos ran more miles on this oil than any oil ever used in anything. You can find it at wall mart a lot cheaper than the other oils and is a lot better oil.

Tim_K, Don't knock the AC filter just because it's a GM parts thing. They are excellent filters,as is their spark plugs. Question for everyone.........What does the "AC" stand for????? It stands for Albert Champion, the founder of Champion spark plugs.Albert worked for GM and left due to a disagreement and started Champion spark plug co.

I prefer Phillips SAE 30 HD. I manage a fleet that racks up over 10 million miles a year. We use Phillips multi-weight oil. The Phillips oil has good detergent properties, it's amazing how clean the insides of most high mileage engines are.
