I picked up an early sure grip, the one with the clutches, and ordered a rebuild kit from Mancini Racing. This thing sat out in the weather for some time, which is why I am rebuilding it. Anyway, when I tried to disassemble it one of the long 3/8ths bolts that hold the two halves together broke. I haven't tried to remove anymore yet because I hate drilling out broken bolts. I assume the bolts are rusted from sitting outside. I don't see any way of getting any penetrating oil in to the threads. Does anybody have an idea how to get the rest of the bolts loose? I was thinking about trying to heat the area where the threaded end of each bolt is with a propane torch. Will this weaken the casting?

Just a thought, are the bolts left hand threads?

Stan

I think Stan could be right on. I know ring bolts are left hand thread. I'll have to remember to look at my sure grip when I'm at my shop tomorrow. Look real close at the head of the bolt and see if it has a L stamped on it.

DU-OHHH! They are left hand thread. Good thing I only broke one. Now, does anyone out there know where I can find a 2&3/4" left hand fine thread 3/8ths bolt?

Have any one-legger center sections laying around? I wouldn't even bother looking for that bolt, just go pull one from a junk center section.

Dart, I already thought of that and checked the one I have here. The open center sections are a one piece affair with a large window to install the spider gears through. I'm hoping I can get one of those bolts from the local Mopar dealer or maybe someplace like Randy's Ring & Pinion. That combo sure isn't a hardware store Item!

A bucket of diesel fuel is a good penetrating oil.
