I have not played around with gearing in a long time and I have a ring and pinion set with no markings... If you had a ring and pinion and you did not know the ratio, you would just count the teeth on each and divide the ring by the pinion, right? The root of each would not come into the equation at all, right?

You are correct, divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion.
