Question

I have a 69 Runner with a 440, 30 over, 10.2 to 1 comp, ported 906w/2.14 1.81 valves, stock intake, crane ign. 509/292 mopar cam with 3200 stall in front of 3.55 gears. I am just running the stock exaust manifolds(not HP) and I want to upgrade my exaust. I know of a set of HP manifolds from a 68 or 69 B-body with the first 3 numbers of their serial being 280 (cant remember the rest) Will these flow good enough with my combo? Keep in mind this is a street car with occasional strip trips. I can get headers, but I would rather avoid the constant hassels if the HP's will flow well enough with 2.5in pipes. Any help would be appreciated, thx

I'm going to be running a very similar combo in my challenger once its all together.
When I posted up my combo, consensus was that the HP manifolds and edelbrock performer were going to very restrictive. And I am just running the MP 484/284 cam.
Performer RPM and headers were highly suggested.

The manifolds are way to restrictive for that combo. The manifolds were not really designed to flow much more than factory specs and you are way hotter than that.

I would buy a nice set of headers. It sounds like your car is fairly nice, so spending a little on a set of headers would be the way to go.

Agreed stock HP manifolds are bad for anything but stock motors..even then they rob your motor 15-25 hp....Try looking at http://www.ttiexhaust.com/
Little pricy but they probably will last as long as the original stock manifolds..

If you must run the stock type manifold's, which I wouldn't recommend. Do yourself a favor and have them opened up for better flow. I've seen good results with extrude honing. They won't be anywhere near as good as headers, but they would be better than stock.

After reading the pro header posts I will offer a counterpoint view. The hipo manifolds are far better than the standard logs. I have seen big blocks with hipo manifolds turn in the 12s. You have the stock intake so the hipo manifolds would keep the stock look. If your choice is between cheap headers and the manifolds I would go with the hipo manifolds. If you want the fastest possible E.T. and are willing to spend the bucks for a quality header then go for it.

Hello,

I will agree with some of the other post as far as headers (good headers) out performing exhaust manifolds, but factory manifolds work great when set up correctly, I'm running a stock 440 Challenger factory intake and exhaust manifolds, point dist(factory single point) factory 340 stall conv (2200) and 391 gears this is a detailed trailer queen and its all correct and date coded parts, full exhaust with 2 mufflers and 2 resonators, the car weighs 3700 lbs and runs 12;20's at 112 and has 250 passes on it,and 7k street miles, you can run exhaust manifolds into the 11's if set up correctly, they like a split pattern cams factory intakes work great also, I really like the stock look and run low 12's lots of guys at the track have a hard time running mid 12's with headers, alum intakes, big lopey cams, and convs............Paul
