I am getting ready to order new gears for my Street driven Cuda and was wondering about off the line traction. I have a 440 Six Pack engine for the car, It should be putting out around 475 HP, Automatic trans with a 2800 Stall Dynamic Converter and Headers. The car has Super stock springs, Small block torsion bars, 90/10 front shocks and BFG T/A 275/60-15 Tires. Does any one have any ideas if 3.91 gears will be to much or would 3.55 be a better choice. I do not want to light the tires up every time I want to get a good launch next to a brand-X car that needs a lesson on Mopars Rule. But I also want them to see my tail lights. Thanks

if you are going to drive it a lot I would go with the 3.55 gear. I have a 4.10 in my roadrunner and cruising on the highway for long distances can get a little old. I don't think there will be much of an ET difference either JMO.

Wow Fly Boy, nice set up! You've done your homework.
You will have nothing but traction problems on the street with BFG Radial TA's. I run the same tire, same size, on the street with 3.91 gears. I don't have anywhere near the HP you have, & the BFG's give up the farm every time. It would be the same with 3.55's but not as bad. Even with all your good suspension mods, those tires will not hold. You have too much muscle! You could try some of the DOT street legal tires & don't forget about the adjustable pinion snubber. The BFG 275-60-15s are pretty tall. 28 inches. Your typical street tire is about 26 inches tall (say a 215-70-14 or F70)
If you crunch the numbers, you'll see running the 28 inch tire with 3.55s gives you about the same effective gear ratio as 26 inch tires with 3.23s. That said, if you'll be running on the highway at all, the 3.55s would be a good choice. Even 3.91s wouldn't be all that bad either with the 28 inch tires. Bottom line though is you're gonna be able to obliterate ANY street tire unless you put in some seriously tall gears (say 2.76s), but that's no fun unless you're into top speed bonzai runs. Nurse it off the line and catch 'em on the big end. My $0.02. |

No matter how you slice, it comes up slick. Wide ones to. your biggest problem besides grip is , well, all that torque your makin. No matter what ya got in there, its gonna take a bit to get use to.
If you have an 8 3/4, you could always try out a buddys. |

I use the 3.91,s with a 26" tall tire and I like it but I dont do much highway driving but I drove 40 miles to the track last weekend on a 55 mph road and I ran 55 to 60 all the way and it was not to bad but I dont do it alot ! I used the 26" G-60 McCreary tires and they worked pretty good racing as I ran 12.49 at 110 mph with them and it was just about topped out in the traps so you might want the 3.55,s or use the 28" tires with the 3.91,s if you do alot of highway cruising! Thanks for all of the good replies. It sounds like this is a case where a lot of HP is not so good for Radial tires. How do radial tires hook up compared to the old bias ply guys. WS23, I did forget to add the pinion snubber and 2-1/2" TTi exhaust system behind the Headers.

Swinger 340 I only had the McCrearys on for a few days and after I ran at the track I took them back off only because they are sticky at times and pick up any gravel on the road and keeps throwing it up in the wheelwells! But they felt liked they hooked pretty good at the track. The first run I did a burnout and they hooked good but I did not leave at full throttle because I was not sure how well they would hook and I ran 12.50 at 109 and the next run I did not do much of a burnout at all and I felt it spin and go sideways just a little and I ran 12.49 at 110 and then it started to drizzle so thats the only runs I made but overall I say they worked very good for the $100 dollars apiece that I paid for them and I was satisfied! I have M/T E.T. street cheater slicks, not sure of the size but 26" tall and around 10" wide on the ground. They fit great, hook up great, and are street legal. They are not that bad in the rain either, I've been caught out in the rain a few times and was able to get home no problem.

I bought them at Jims Racing Tires in Balt MD. and they are G-60,s as they would fit my stock wheelwells and they were $100 dollars each and here is a website that might help you www.mccrearytire.com , Good luck and let us know how you make out , Ron

By the way Larry the Road Star tires say "Dirt" on them but dont let that scare you as thats the ones I used and other people I know use them and they work OK as I was concerned when I saw dirt written on the sidewall but thats the tire they said to use and it was a pretty good hookup as it felt almost like a slick hooking up! Thanks for the link Ron, the Road Stars are what I was looking for as a matter of fact! One of the car mags did a strip test of the McCrearys, B.F. Goodrich drag radials, and the Mickey Thompson E.T. Streets a couple of years back (wish I could find that article now). The McCrearys outdid the BFGs hands down, and posted almost identical 60 ft. times as the MTs, and cost quite a bit less than either of the others. Just what the doctor ordered to get my old hemi to hook up!

I'm wondering if the G-60-15 are the same size as a 255-60-15 or 275-60-15?
How big are the L in comparison. Jason |

The G-60 is about equeal to a 245-60-15 in height and the L-60's are about the same as a 275-60-15. And they work great on the street. My stepson has a set of G-60's on his 12.0 second Mustang and they hook just like like a slick would at the track. They even wrinkle the sidewall just like a slick. The asphalt does rough up the tread in a hurry though. But they are under $100 each and well worth it.

I have the M/T street ET tires and they hook up pretty good, and are marginal on wet roads at reduced speeds, but if you hit puddles of water it is like being on ICE! I usually slow way down to 30-35 MPH when it rains.
I buddy totaled his Charger durring a rail storm driving on the "cheater slicks." As for gearing, I think traction will be simular with either set of gears, but it sounds like you have a suspension that will work pretty good. If you do much highway driving I would use the 3.55:1 gears. I would look for sticky (low thredwear) street tires, maybe BGF comp VR4? or simular tires, not the BGF T/As which have a 400 threadwear. even though my old T/A are OK if I baby the car off the line and watch out for spinning the tires when hitting second gear |
