I just put in the same set-up in my sons 70 duster 318. We are running TDC for smoothness but I believe the instructions said for performance you need to set at 35 degrees BTDC. Now , if you don't have timing tape, I just put one on my 360 and I messured 35 degrees out to be 2& 3/16 inches to the right of the notch in the dampener. Let me know if that helps.....

Hopefully a small block person can give you more specific recommendations, but...

Initial timing (vacuum disconnected, at idle) should be between 2 and 15 degrees BTC. 10 would be a starting point. Total timing (around 2500 rpm, vacuum disconnected) should be between 30 and 38 degrees, 34 should be a good starting point.
Vacuum advance is harder to recommend, trial and error is best once initial and total are set. Every setting needs testing, listening for light detonation and depends on too many factors. The vacuum advance improves gas mileage, and sometimes idle.

Good luck,

I have the orange box on a basicly stock 73 318 with headers and custom dual. I ended up setting the initial timeing (vac disconnected) to 8 deg BTC. Less, I get detonation with cheap gas when hot, over 12 deg I get no appreciable performance improvment. All of this testing was over 3-4 months with a pad of paper to record everything. My wife thought I lost it.

This is strictly a street machine.

I am getting ready to put on one of the performer intakes as well. Which carb did you end up going with?
Hope this helps

dobguy thanks for the info, the way you timed your car was almost identical to what i did and it does seem to work pretty well.
As for the carb Im using I chose the Edelbrock 600 man. choke 1405, i had several carbs in hand when I did the install 1st was a 750 double pumper and that was too big for the stock heads ,cam, points dist etc. It would bog and you could see black smoke out the tailpipes at idle but once you got it going the performance was good,so then I tried a 750 vac sec. and that was really good no noticeable bog and good power in mid and topend but it seem not to have that crisp response i got from the 600,maybe with better heads more cam, gear,a small converter the 750 vac sec would have been perfect,I still have the carb so if I decide to do more to the eng I at least have it.
Hope this helps.
