I have a 71 Challenger 340, I just put in a new starter and a new relay. Now everytime I turn the key, there is a loud clicking sound from the starter. I've tried everything and am at my wits end. What else can I do, what should I look for?

Could it be the starter or is it one of the wires? The battery is completely charged. Could it have something to do with the coil?

The old starter was shot and the relay was so corroded, I figured I might as well replace it now before it gives me any problems. But now that they are both replaced I cant even get the starter to even spin. It just clicks.

Pull the starter and set it on the ground still hooked up. Tap the starter and see what it does.

Hello Elyod413,

This may be as simple as a poorly charged battery. Your old starter was more than likely a very "Loose" unit (Bearings not even close to tight.) Your new starter probably needs a little more juice to get it moving. Double check the voltage reading at your battery...A fully charged batt. will read as high as 16 volts. A battery nearly discharged will read 12.5 and lower. If your starter relay was as corroded as you say, it may be what you were trying to prevent- poor connections at the relay or even the battery.

Ok, I decided to forget trying to fix it and went out and got a new starter. I just put it in after 6 hours of work. It turns out the starter I bought was totally shot, and I had only had it for 3 weeks. Kind of annoying if you ask me, but at least my mopar is on the road again.
