Question

Okay fellas. I know that this topic has been discussed more times than can be counted, but what is the best all around street cam for the 383. This .509 MP cam in my engine is okay, but it doesn't wake up until around 3000 rpm or so. Also, this engine seems to load up a little bit until around 2500 rpm or so when punching it from a start. Is this the .509 cam at fault? I want something that will lay rubber as soon as you start in on the throttle. 383 magnum, 4-speed, 3.55 suregrip, 750 Holley, timing 36 degrees total, MSD6a box. Thanks.

I had a 383 in 67 dart that ran 12.90's with about 9.5.1 compression. with 516 casting heads. Cam was a Crane 280 hydraulic 480 lift single pattern. Convertor was 3200stall 10in. dynamic with 4.30 gears. Intake was street dominator with 850 Holley double pumper. Man this thing would move! I paid about $650 bucks for this engine and never regretted it. I just freshened up the lower end and this engine is going in my 65 coronet 4spd. with 3.55 gears. I wouldn't trade it for a hemi! Well , maybe I would. hahaha! Back to the dart, I put in another 383 with 13.5.1 compression, 452 heads ported with 2.14 in. 1.81ex , 1.6 in & 1.5 ex rollers. 590 solid cam, 4500 convertor, 1050 dominator, tm6 intake. It now runs 11.40's at 118mph! Not as streetable , but Just goes to show you what you can do with the lowly 383! Oh the distributor was a Mopar tach drive distributor. I cannot stress how good these are!!!

O crush;

The .509 cam has alot of duration to it. With the 3.55 gears, its no wonder it has a hard time. Its kind of like a cork in it. A smaller 280 dur. cam would help this. You lose top end though. A set of 4.10's or better with the .509 are more in line.
When launching the car, you should bring up the RPM's a bit and dump the clutch. High enuff not to spin them like nuts, Not to low as to bog the engine.

Thumbs up

I use the MP 484-284 cam in my 383 72 Dart www.bigblockdart.com with an Edelbrock Torker , 3.91,s , 700DP , 452 stock valve heads , 9.5 stock pistons , TA 10" 3000 convertor and it runs great! Just went to track last week and ran 12.49 at 110 and I drove the 40 miles up and back and the car runs and drive great on the street! Ron
