I am starting to resurrect the 85 600es turbo conv that
I have had since new, which has been off the road for
almost 10 years.I have always liked the wheels that
came with the car,I thought that 2 of them were damaged from an automatic carwash years ago.A
recent close examination of the scuffed wheels
suggests that the wheels themselves are okay, that what appears to be a transparent spray-on film is what
actually is scratched.
Can anyone verify whether or not thats the case, and if
so,is there a way to dissolve the old coating and to reapply it to protect them from tarnishing??thx-John

I have stripped some aluminium rims off of my Daytona Shelby Z with aircraft stripper. Tal-Strip II (2) from a company called Mar-Hyde. You can buy it at a automotive paint supply store. It is very easy to use. Just paint it on with a brush and it will very quickly take off the clear coat on your wheels. I wash the residue off with lots of water and then scuff lightly and paint. You have to use caution when using this product. The fumes are bad for you and you DO NOT want to get any on your skin or clothes. It burns very bad when you get it on you. Use good gloves and be careful with it. Use with good ventalation. I do it outside. If you get some on you wash it off with lots of water.

Default Another question:

Wow-that stuff sounds quite corrosive.Should I have the tires dismounted and then work on the bare rims?
Will it harm the tires themselves? Finally, what should
I use to re-coat the wheels when they're done-spray
lacquer?

The Tal-Strip is quite thick. Sort of like pudding so it will not run when you paint it on. This is what most body shops use to strip cars with without sanding or sandblasting. After a good cleaning and washing with soap you can spray with a number of different clear coats. I use an enamel spray paint (not sure the name) but most auto parts stores sell some kind of "wheel paint" just for this application.
Just be careful and cautious if you try it.
