Question

I need your opinion. How tough is it to install a cam with the engine in the car ? I don't have alot of experiance but I am ambitious. The local shop wants $400, is it worth it ? By the way it is a 360 in a1974 duster.

So you are trying to figure out if you want to change the cam yourself or pay someone $400. It really all depends on you. If you work on cars as a hobby, then the answer is simple, do it yourself. If you have too much money & no time, pay to have it done.

Replacing a cam is not hard job, but may seem like a big job for the novice. I take it that you have never done this before, so you need a manual & a knowledgeable friend to help you. You can use this experience to begin working on cars for pleasure, if this idea suits you.

Buy the manual and read the cam replacement procedure. Then ask yourself if this is something you believe you can do and something you want to do. If the answer is no to either, then you are destined to help your local mechanic send his kid to college with that fee.

In case it wasn't clear, that's a lot of money for a simple cam change.

When the front of the engine is torn down, and the radiator out, there may be a clarance problem with a vertical bracket up front .
This bracket can be removed if needed. not easy sometimes, just a pain. Not every car has the room in front.
I think $400 is alot.

I did this 2 years back in my 1975 Duster with a 340. It was very easy. I do NOT have AC on this car but it was just drain the radiator, remove, and remove the one piece grill. Mine slid past the verticle grill support with no problem. Go for it and enjoy.

i just did a cam change last month and it is a charger with ac and it was my first cam change. it took me in total about 12 hours start to finish but i stretched it out over a week and a sat. the hard part is pulling everything off the motor and putting it back i had the extra parts of the ac that took a little longer. after you get down to the cam and lifters just take your time and be careful and you should not have any problem.
always have a manual on hand .
