Hi,
I am just about to install a 509 cam in place of a 484 cam in a 440ci. I will be changing the valve springs to match as well. My concern is whether my power brakes will work correctly after the install. My mopar has standard steering. A 850 Holley double pumper carb will also be installed so vacuum usage is mainly for the power brakes. I have a 3000 stall, 4:30 gears, 10:1 comp, 4000 lbs mopar.

I have seen alot of them not work good with the Holley carb. I run an Edlebrock for just that reason. So does everyone I know with that cam. The Edlebrock is a great street carb with much less maintenance than the holley. But at the track the Holley's seem to win. I wish I knew if a different cam would have fixed this problem. If I had to do it all over again I'd look at Hughes cams or something more up to date. Perhaps they can recommend a cam that can achive vacuum and power. just my 2 cents.

I have a 509 in my 440. I run about 5-7 inches of vacuum. I also use a vacuum canister to help with the brakes. The brakes work fine under most all normal conditions. I have never yet had a problem. Although I have no power brakes at idle, which is fine as I don't need them at that time.
Hope this helps.

I wouldn't discount the .509 profile as being "old". The new Hughes cams are good, but the .509 is as good as any of the cams Hughes offers. I have a .509 in my 360. PRO is also running the same cam in his 360 with the Edelbrock heads. His car ran 12.98 with a 4speed and 3.23 gears. I have not taken mine out to the track yet. Besides if you are looking for good vacuum stay with the stock cam...

The Holley should be fine on your combo. The flow ratings on the Edelbrock carbs are not the same as Holley. Using the Holley flow bench, the Carter 750 only flows about 650. There is not way the 750 Carter would get the job done on your motor. Granted the Holley may need more tuning, but it would out flow a comparable Carter any day.

I HAVE A .509 CAM IN MY DART WITH A 360 AND A HOLLEY 600 AND IT RUNS FINE. I HAD TO REPLACE THE POWER VALVE WITH A 2.5" UNIT AND THATS ALL IT TOOK TO MAKE IT RUN GOOD. MY VACUUM AT IDLE (1100 RPM) IS ABOUT 5-6"

I HAVEN'T TAKEN MY CAR TO THE TRACK YET AND I AM GOING TO SEE WHEN I GO THERE WHICH WORKS BETTER THE 600 OR 750 HOLLEY I'LL LET YOU GUYS KNOW WHEN I GO THERE THIS WILL PROBABLY BE IN 2 MONTHS OR SO THOUGH.

DON'T DISREGAURD THE HOLLEY IT HAS POWER THERE IF YOUR WILLING TO TINKER WITH IT!

Thumbs up

Ref; 509 cam. I have an almost identical set-up. The cam need a lot of advance at idle. I have mine set at 25 degrees at 1000 rpm. This will take some rework of the advance plate or you will have too much advance at higher rpm. Mine idles at 1000 with 10" vacuum. I also put on a Crane vacuum tank. Brakes and other vacuum acces work fine. DON'T give up on that cam with a little "tinkering" that cam is a sweet street cam. I'm also using the 850 DP and a TM-7 intake. It is a little short on torque from idle to 2500 rpm-- but who needs it at that rpm range?? It pulls hard up to 6200 with no bogs ( thanks to the huge amt of low rpm advance). Keep with it!! the triple titanium-computer designed-billet stuff is pretty,, but the old stand by stuff works and don't break. It will give you more torque & hp than you will be able to hook-up anyway. beeper

I would run the Holley carb, I don't think too much of the Edelbrock's.
I think we'll have to have a shootout at Cayuga with all the guys with 440's with the .509 cam. I broke in my 440 last month. With some luck I'll have the car out for the September Mopar day.

If you have the room and $$, consider going to a vacuum pump won't fix the Holley, but allows power brake operation at idle, even if the motor stalls, or while towing! - see my page for details. http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/pump-tech.htm

I know Mopar day is August 6- Rainout date from June. The car won't be ready unless It gets towed there and I run it fully gutted.
I have to do some fabricating and paint.
My 3 month overhaul of the car has turned into a year and a half. Its actually farther apart than this time last year.

Well, I'll get to the point. I have a setup in my Road Runner that only gives me 5 inch's at 800 RPM. I installed the pump below ( http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/pump-tech.htm ) and a Reservoir along with it. I tried both (pump and Reservoir) without each other and using them together was the best. I have power brakes at any light and for stopping. It gives me about two shots (most of us only need one). I still do not feel good about the front drums so, Next spring the front's get changed to disk.s.

Hope this helps.
