Hi Guys,
Its time for me to start looking into what parts I should use for my 727 buildup. Its going to see 75% street, 25% strip duty. I want it to be a strong performance transmission, without having shifts so hard its too uncomfortable to drive on a regular basis. Unfortunately, I do not know where to start, If you all can help me, I'd appreciate it very much.

What would be the best rebuild kit to use?

I want it to be a manual valve body, and I want to use the slapstick shifter I have, so it cannot be a reverse pattern valve body. What valve bodies should I be looking at? What do you all recommend?

I bought 2 727 cores from my buddy, he said a Turbo Action Cheetah Valve Body is in one of the 727 cores. I don't think that suits my needs, does it? He also gave me a 5.0 kickdown lever or something.

Ideally, a 2800 RPM stall converter is what I think I should be using. It is going behind a 451 stroker engine with a 2500-6000rpm
Hughes/Ultradyne cam and a 3.55 rear end ratio (just for a little bit more information). I have my eyes on an 11" Coan unit sold my Muscle Motors, or I've also heard that Turbo Action had good converters too. What do you all recommend?

Lastly, there are many different shift kits out there. I've heard the B&M shift kit is unreasonably harsh. I've been told that a Trans-Go shift kit was good. What should I be looking at here? What do you all recommend?

P.S. I haven't been able to identify both of my 2 727-B transmission cores, and I even tried to look them up in a few books. The ID numbers are 1) PK351581735528518 and 2) PK3515847133984438 Does anyone have the
resources to find out what they came from? I'd like to know which one was better for my application.

Hi phubarr; use the 5.0 ratio lever, and a B&M Transpak. You'll have forward shift pattern and good quality shifts. As for internals, make sure all the hard parts are in good condition, and replace ALL the soft parts with hi-perf stuff like TCI or B&M. That should about do it. Personally I'd use a bit higher stall maybe a 3000-3400 range, but I'm a launch freak. Either way will work great. Dan

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the input. What I'm really looking for is a forward pattern _manual_ setup. I really like the idea of having different 'modes' like the TransGo offers. I was leaning towards that. Does the B&M kit turn it into a manually shifted transmission?

phubarr,thats exactly what the B&M Manualpak does. You will have forward shift pattern but with full manual shift. You also can thro away the kickdown linkage as its no longer used. have used this in our 727 for the past 8 or 9 years with zero problems.The part # for 727's is 10219. Hope this helps.

I'll seriously consider the B&M. Does it have different 'modes' like the TransGo unit?

Does the TransGo unit need the kickdown linkage?

Do you have any experience using the it (the TransGo unit)?

Josh I haen't used Trnsgo for mant years. They seemed better than stock but still didn't eliminate the flair on the 2-3 shift that Torkflites are notorious for. And yes you still need the kickdown linkage,at least the kits I remember. Not sure about the new ones. The B&M unit is 1 mode only-full manual shift. You'll like it! Dan

Try Pro Trans - Dave Smith - 661-940-7400 - they have a nice kit with everything in it for $195 - used one recently to do a race 904.

I was gathering info for my buildup that I will do after I put together my 451. Considering that the car isnt on the road yet, I think its safe to say I wont do the tranny work for another few months yet. If you want I'll let everyone know when its together, and how it runs.

As for the rebuild, I'm no expert..BUT.. I do know of a good reference manual that has saved my ass a few times when it came to rebuilding my 2 transmissions. I picked it up at a garage sale for $2. Chiltons Domestic Automatic Transmission Manual for I believe 1974-80. Not only info on 727, but a host of other transmissions, including 4 full pages of ID #s for Torqueflite series alone. I'll look it up and post later.

phubarr, I agree with TJP on the Trans-Go kit's. I have used then for 28 years and they work great. I even have one in my 99 Durango. What is nice about their kit is you use your throttle preasure linkage (kick down) so you have a softer shift when you are joy riding and you will bark the tires when you are into the throttle. The TF-2 is a good street/strip kit for full automatic shifts, And the TF-3 is the full manual shift kit with a normal shift pattern. This is the kit i used in my 440 Cuda.

If anyone is near the Minneapolis area and looking for a Mopar trans man I recommend Chuck Lofgren at Lofgren Auto Specialties. I have a few friends and my dad that use his trannies. The first time I met him was when a friend of mine went to pick up his 727 from him. I think the bill was around 1500.00 with a new Dynamic Convertor. I asked him before we left what he did for that kind of money. We ended up staying there an extra 45 min. as he gladly guided us through his performance rebuild from the front pump to the rear roller clutch. He showed us how he lightened components and where he machined to replace the thrust washers with bearings and what kind of clutches he used and why. His honesty and openess blew me away and my next trans will definately go through his shop. Of course getting it to Arizona is going to bite, but it will be worth it.
