My Truck is a D100 with a slant six with a A904 tranny. I keep going in & out of debate with myself about upgrading the engine to a 5.9L. The truck is certified in California and my guess is that for everything to still be legal the swap would have to be a complete engine/tranny swap with wiring harness, parts, and all. What is entailed with this project? Ineed as much help or other idea's as I can get.

rather, thats one slow truck you got there,I definitely think an upgrade is required!! what year it is makes a difference,67 and older you wont need squat in Cal. 68 and older you better check with an emissions referee before hand so you dont waste your time.A 360 would be the ultimate daily driver....PRO...

I have a 87 d150 with a slant. It has to be the slowest vehicle I have owned. 120km max.
I am seriously considering putting my spare 400 in it. All the guys at work are racing there slow Chevy trucks, they would cry if I put a bigblock in mine. They wouldn't race my 400 5th ave but want to race my 440 Volare. As far as parts, you'll need: Rad, hoses, motor mounts, truck pan with pickup, drive shaft (unless you use a 904), exhaust. It would be best if you can get a complete motor and tranny with carb and brackets. Wiring is no problem. With me I have a 318 and a 400 to choose from. If I go through the hassle I'll go big. |

I can honestly say That I'm happy with it the way it is. It goes above 90 mph but since the speedo doesn't I don't know the exact top speed. I did add a jacobs ignition systems add what it did for the truck was worth the $400. I really just want another little power boost. But as you can imagine there is not much in legal upgrades in california for this engine. When my grandparents had the truck the shop that serviced their cars did not pay attention to a leaking rear pinion seal and becuase a lack of gear oil ruined everything inside. To repair, the shop replaced the axle with one that had a 2.91 gear ratio. The original ratio was 3.54. Honestly, if I just want that "little bit of extra oomph." again would I be accurate in saying the gear change back to the original would satisfy that small need of mine. I would prefer to keep the truck stock as far as the drivetain go's with the exception of the ignition system. All the money I would spend on an engine upgrade could pay for the upgrades to brake and suspension components plus all sorts of little extra goodies for the truck. What's your input?

Spike440, what headers do you use? Can I make b-body headers fit? I'll make motor mounts. I want to get all the parts together
so the swap goes easy. Glen440 |
