I recently installed a Carter 625 4 bbl with a cast 70 340 intake on my 72 Satellite
318. auto. 3.23 rear The cars runs fine but I THINK it's running a little rich. Exhaust smells soggy How can you tell if a car is running too rich or too lean ? I do not know what jets I have in it now. If it matters I am at 3700 feet ASL Thanks in advance Fred.. |

a lean carter (or any other carb) will seem to run better with your hand over the carb throat, causing a "richer" condition. A really lean carb will surge with no apperant vacuum leak. A rich carb will water your eyes at the local drive through, youll really smell it. Get fatter rods to lean out a carter, or smaller jets, rods are easier, just pull them out and reinstall the fat ones.

Time for some thicker rods. My eyes were watering ( Gig Time ) Sounds like I will pull the old ones , take them to a shop and buy larger ones The next size up Fred.. |

318fred I have seen them so lean that they drip from the nozzles. Take the air breather off and start it, is it dripping? They can be so lean that they start the main circuit and drip. I suggest trying smaller rod to richen it at part throttle first till it stops dripping. Also does it want to hesitate while accelerating, this another clue.
Good luck, they are good street carbs when correctly dialed in. fox |

Strip kit
You may want to invest in a Carter Strip Kit for your carb.
I am going through a similar thing with my Edelbrock Performer Carb. It was jetted WAY too rich for my 383 and had that rich smell as well as fouling the plugs. I went to the next smaller size jet and stayed with the same rod size as well going up one step up spring size. This the car runs SMOOTH as glass now but I seemed to lose some power. I just got back from a 1000 trip and checked the plugs. They are white indicating I am too lean. I suspected that because the car was running hotter than normal. The kit has several different jets and rods so you can find a combo that works best for your car. And mind you, when you modify your engine some more you will have to recalibrate the carb so the kit comes in handy. |

Best approach is the manual from Edelbrock which will show how that carb # can be jetted properly, no guess work either richer or leaner sytematicallly.Look back for DR R's question of the carb issue and I gave him the part # of the book you need or you can go to the parts store and look in a new carb box and reference the book.

318FRED:
YOUR CARTER SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHIPPED WITH A .400 PRIMARY JET, AND A .071X.047 STEP UP ROD. IF SO IT IS QUITE RICH FOR YOUR ALTITUDE, I WOULD CHANGE THE JET TO A .398 OR .395 AND CHANGE THE STEP UP ROD TO A .074X.052. THIS SHOULD GET YOU IN THE BALL PARK. THE SECONDARY JET SHOULD BE A .395 WHICH SHOULD BE ALL RIGHT. YOU MAY WANT TO TRY PUTTING TH SECONDARY JET IN THE PRIMARY AND THE PRIMARY IN THE SECONDARY POSITION, AND SEE HOW THAT WORKS BEFORE YOU BUY ANY PARTS. A LITTLE RICH IN THE SECONDARIES IS NO BIG DEAL. YOU CAN USE EITHER CARTER PARTS OR EDELBROCK WHICHEVER YOU CAN BY IN YOU NEIGHBORHOOD. HOPE THIS HELPS DENNIS P.S.
