Hi all,
Well, i'm almost set to fire up my rebuilt 383 and have some timing questions. First off here's the motor specs: 383, 10:1, MP 284/.484 straight up, Indy SRs, Holley 830cfm annular, Performer RPM, MSD distributor, MSD Digital 6, Sanderson block huggers, 2 1/2 duals with Straightline muffs. Ok, now here's what I'm going to do-- is this procedure valid? 1) bring motor to 10 degrees before TDC on compression stroke. 2) insert intermediate shaft so that slot on shaft is paralled to centerline of cam. 3) pick a tower on distributor to be #1 and point rotor at it. 4) drop distributor into place, put on cap and run plug wires. *** THIS SHOULD GIVE ME 10 DEGREES OF INITIAL TIMING, RIGHT???? 5) start engine varying speed between 1500 and 2500 rpm for 30 min. 6) dump oil, re-torque heads, check valve lash. 7) play with the spring combinations so there is 36 to 38 degrees total, all in by 2500 rpm. OK, now what did I forget. This is the first time for me doing this-- the whole thing from scratch I mean, so I want to get it right. Please give me some input. Thanks, pat [This message has been edited by azazello (edited August 06, 2000).] |

Sounds pretty good, there's only one other thing to consider. After you pick a tower on the cap to be #1 and point rotor at it,turn the distributor housing slightly until the reluctor&pickup line up.This way if the rotor and cap are out of phase a few degrees it will be that much more accurate.good luck.
