I am looking at purchasing a vehicle in which the owner has installed a "high stall" converter. However the car has highway gears (either 2.7's or 3.2's). I am worried that the engine won't turn enough rpm's to keep the converter from slipping and burning up the tranny. Is this a valid concern? The car would mostly see highway driving and dragstrip passes. Thanks for any insight.

im not an expert on this ,but motor should turn enough rpms to lock convertor at 55-60 mph if thats the speed on your highways.im going to run 3500 stall with 391 gears and 27" tires, running 3500 rpms at 60mph.till the next gas station.

I have driven a couple different small block cars on the street with up to a 4200 stall with gears from 2.76 to 4.10. You really won't notice much "stall" effect unless you are getting aggressive with the gas pedal. It will cut down the gas mileage some though!

my suggestion would be find out what the stall speed actually is & try to keep cruise rpm within 500 rpms of that.

Actually if your not cruising at an rpm above the actual stall speed(not advertised) then the converter is still allowing some slippage which creates alot of excess heat in the fluid!! This may or maynot be detrimental to yuour trannys life expectancy,if you have a big cooler, dont drive in excess of 75* weather, avoid stop and go traffic itll prob live,if in doubt install a trans temp gauge, youd like to see 190* max although brief moments above that are ok.Its said that for every 10* above 190 depreciates your trans life by 10K.Generally speaking converters with less than 2800 stall can and do live on the street..........PRO.......

My turn....
I good convertor company can make a high stall unit that will allow you to walk away from a stop with out reving the motor too high. An off the shelf TCI, Alabama or B&M is NOT one of those quality unit of which I speak.

Thanks for the info everybody. I am probably going to go look at the car again tonight and try to get some specs and so forth on the converter. Unfortunately the car doesn't have a tach, so I'll have to kind of evaluate how it drives by the seat of my pants. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hey Mr FuryusVIP, What is a "good" convertor company you speak of? I have had Turbo-Action and Coan converters and had no problems. Is there somewhere in the city that makes ones?
