I've got a chance to pick up an empty 742 carrier that is "bare". If I get a kit for the bearings etc, can I put my 742 ring and pinion and cone type surgrip in? I've heard that I need the retainers. Do they come with a rebuild kit?

What do you mean by "retainers".
You NEED the bearing caps that came with the case as a minimum.
ARP sells bolts/studs for the bearing caps if it dosen't have them.

You will need the bearings/races, shims, bearing adjusters, pinion seal, etc..

Thanks Jims451, I have a 742, 3.91 rack and pinion I picked up from a friend who swapped to 4.10s. I have an extra sure grip from a 489. I figured I could pick up an open 742 somewhere and swap everything in. The carrier retainers (bearings and adjusters) are of different sizes and was wondering if that affected the swap into a 742 case. I'm pretty sure it is just a swap if I use the 742 carrier bearing caps and adjusters with a 742 rebuild kit. My post was to verify this but I guess I botched it. Thanks.
