Concerning the Hughes #0914BL cam
458/470, 208/214 @ .050, is it really necessary to use their valve springs or would the stock springs or another manufacturers springs work just as well? This is a street duty 400, mostly stock, and will rarely be run over 5,000 or 5,500. Thanks for your input. MoJoe |

Its always best to get new springs with your new cam. When there matched from the maker to work with there cam, it will , most of the time , keep there cam under warranty as well guarrente everything will work togther well.
Ask Huges what the presures are for there springs. If your springs are new, and you know there presures, they might work just fine. It should be close to there pressures. |

I just installed the HE0914Al small block cam and the recommended valve springs are allot stiffer than you would think. According to Hughes the 1105 springs have 130 psi seat pressure and 300 psi @ 0.500"
Stock springs have less than 100 seat, and I think the Mopar general performance springs only are about 110? seat pressure and I don't think either has as stiff a spring rate (evel lower pressure @ 0.500".) You may need valve spring retainers to match the Hughes springs. The spring wire is larger in diameter so the inside of the retainer has to be smaller than stock. |
