Tire manufactures will give rim ranges there tires will work on.
The 15 vs. 16 rim is really down to your taste in looks and not so much as the amount of rubber on the road. The 15 inch rim can be had in many widths. The wider the rubber, the widder the foot print. How much rubber can you get on a 15 X 15 rim ;D Seriously...I don't know the amount of different sizes there are for a 16 in rim. If you can find the profile your looking for, your in good shape weather its a 15 or 16. As for myself, I try to keep tire diameter the same on all 4 corners. On a rear wheel drive car, the rears get a little fatter when the power of the engine is up from stock some. Even rubber all around isn't bad ethier for the street cruiser. On my street bruser, the rears are about 1 1/2 inch wider with the same daimeter. |

If its just till Aug, I would get som used "burnoff" tires, whatever is around the fits on the rim. I have 275/60s on the back of my 69, and they fill up the well okay without a spring relocation. I doubt 295/70 will fit, but I think 295/50s will, on a 15 inch rim. Try to find a well-stocked tire guy to test fit a few, then buy the ones you like best from him so he don't shoot ya

echo,
I have a friend with a 71 Charger super bee that has the 295/50's on 15x10 magnum 500 style rims in the rear. He also has 265/50's on 15x8 rims on the front. The front tires do rub on the inside on hard turns and the rears have about 1/4" of clearance from the inner wheel well. That's too close for comfort for me, but they do fit. I myself am going with the 255/50 on 15x7 rims for all four corners of my bee. A good rule of thumb that I heard is that as long as you can slide your hand behind the tire, then it is not too big. |

Tire size
Well stocked Tire-Guy here... from Canada..
Tire sizes for your car can vary a lot. 295/50/15's are about 10 " or so wide and about 26.7" tall you can fit them on a 15x8 squeezing them on there.. the contact patch isnt quite as wide as it could be, if you can round up 15x10's put 295/50's on they hook good. But then again you loose height. 275/60/15's are about 28" tall and about 9" or so width and can squeeze em on 15x7's if needed be 255/60/14's are kinda big for a 14x7 but Im not sure if a lot of company's make them in that size in a Cooper Cobra G/T they make 245/60/14's and you can put em on a 14x7 with ease. 295/70's are too tall. even 295/60s are like 29" tall. if you have a steep gear you could get away with em 255/60's are all i could fit under my dart with 15x7 steel wheels but now i have a 29x11 with ease after moving the springs n moving the wheel wells but it depends what u wanna do for traction. oh well good luck!! |

On my '71 Charger I have 255x60x15" on 15"x7" rims.
These tires fit easely on the '71 Charger with room for bigger tires, expecially in the rear. I wish I had gone with 15x8" rims up front so I could go to a wider (but nor taller) tire. In the front there seems to be room for a wide low profile tire as long as the tire height is under 26"-27". For racing, in the rear I got some 15"x10" rims (5" back spacing) with Mickey Thompson Street ET 11.5"x26" tires. These are a tight fit and come close to (about 1/2") the front leaf spring clamp. |

Since we are talking tire sizes
I have a '68 GTX, and since a lot of you on this thread are referring to B-Bodies, I thought I would pipe in with a question. I have seen a couple of people running 295/50/15 on the back, on what I assumed was a 10" wide rim. This is the setup I think I want to go with on my car. Only thing I would like to know is what back spacing is recommended? I saw someone mention that a 5" backspacing only left minimal clearance at the spring bracket. The tires I am going to get are like-new from a buddy of mine. However he has them on 12" wide rims, with what he measured to be 4¾"-5" back spacing. When we test fitted them on my car, they interfered with the outer lip on the fender, but it seemed like there was still a couple of inches of clearance between the tire and the spring and inner wheel well. I have an 8¾ rear end on my car if that makes a difference at all. I guess I could always get it in the air and try to make all the measurements myself, but figured I would first pose it to the experts who have probably tried and errored a little on their own. Obviously front tires/wheels are going to be narrower. I am thinking like a 235/60/15 on a 6½ or 7" wide rim up front. It is hard enough to turn at low speeds without power steering, so I surely don't need a big fat meat up front.
Thanks Cr |
