Are there any mods to be done to these MP distributors or are they just a bolt in.The two I have both have one heavy spring on one weight.
Can anyone shed some light on the modifcation where you would take and weld one third of the slot on one side of the advance plate then file it to match the stud on the weight. Also you would take and install two lighter springs. My advance plate has 13r stamped into it.Does anyone know what that means.Has anyone done this modification. Not knowing much about recurving a distributor {not knowing anything about recurving a distributor} it seemed like a good idea.I seen the article in the July 98 issue of Chrysler Power, they also seemed to have a lot of budget fixes.
I would like to try this on my Barracuda it's a 383 stock bore
9.6-1 CR
906 stock heads with a 3 angle
.474 MP cam
MP electronic ignition with orange box
MP single plane
750 holley double pumper
auotmatic B&M holeshot 3000 converter
430 gear
After the alterations to the distributor you install it start the engine bring it to operating
temp. and set the timing at 32-34 degrees.Well what do you think and what's that 13r stamped on the advance plate. I have a distributor to play with has anyone tried this mod. Ken

they are already hp units, all advance in by 2400rpm, but you may want to modify total advance if it doesnt match your engines needs. Mine works great at 34 degrees total,(good power, no detonation, and starst easily) but yours may not! That works by adjusting the slot length, either adding metal to lessen total, or grinding some away to add to it.

The 13R on the distributor plate means 13 degrees on the distributor. That is 26 crankshaft degrees mechanical spark advance. Theoretically, with 10 degrees initial timing setting, that would give you 36 degrees total spark advance above about 2500 rpm.

Let me add to that. I just did a recurve myself and its real easy. Just weld up the slot and remachine it in. mtrv and 440 are right on but I'll add more. The slot length for a 34 total advance is .480 long. the slot length for the 26 total advance is .450 long. Because of this I ended up machining my slot to a length of .425 long and am getting a total of 20 advance now. I prefered to totally weld the slot up then I remachined it completly. Its now perfect!.
Ps....The slot width is .246 wide but i'm sure that this varies since its stamped in. You now have no need to guess at the lenght and width to get the results you want. Also make sure to set the distance from the reclutor to the mag pick up at .008 with a non magnetic shim.
Good luck.........DAVE

I have a advance plate that is a R11 which is 22 degrees mechanical advance and it measured .415. How did you get a 20 degrees out of a .425 slot that you had machined. Im confused?

I'm confused too Challanger. I wish I could explaine this one but I cant. My numbers worked out good for me because it seemed that for every 1 degree it worked out to a difference of .0038 on length. Mine works great. I cant see where the variable is for me since I did the math and it worked out ok. The only thing I can think of is possibly the dia of the pin which would vary the amount of throw distance but that is the only thing I can come up with for now.
sorry if I spoke incorrectly. Maybe some of the other guru's have better input than mine...good luck

Hi Dave
Im glad you answered my reply. Im working on a distributor right now. It has the R11 and I welded it up 1/3, now it measures .276 which is exactly a 1/3 of the .415 of the R11. Not much mechanical advance but some. I did install it in the race car today. Previously I had a stock distributor including the heavy spring. Today with the stock dist in at 38 at 3000 in 90 degree weather it ran 10.91, I put the modified one in timed at 34 in at 1200 and went a 10.89 pretty close but the car 60 ft 1.524 and1.525 so I was happy with the consistent times which I do believe had something to do with the weights being all the way advanced and not bouncing around beings my launch RPM is 2500. Just some of my thoughts. Or maybe Im just rambling cause Ive only had 6 hours of sleep in the past 2 days. Dont you just love racing and getting home at 3:30 am just to turn around and drive another 2 hours to another track. Anymore input welcome.
