Go with a 340 or 360. Anybody can build a 440 to go fast. Try something different to be different.
HV Best of luck with your project what ever you choose |

Well, you have to decide how much money you want to spend and how fast you want to go. A 440 is a tough fast engine, costing less to make the equivalent horsepower of a 340. A 340 on the other hand is a unique engine in itself. If high horsepower is not a concern, then go with the 340. I personally like more cubic inches. I have gone this route once. I had a '73 Valiant 4 D with a /6 and I put a mild 360 in it. The car run 14.5's in the 1/4 at about 100 mph. I tried different parts in the engine and during that five years period I run a best of 13.26 at 107 mph with a pretty hot 360, 727 3.23 gears and regular radial tires. The car weighed about 3600 lbs. In this form the engine liked higher rpms, and wasn't best suited for everyday driving. So I switched to a 440, it was about the same level engine as my first 360 had been, and nothing else except the trans and egngine was changed in the car. This way it run 12.94/109 mph, better than with the hot 360, and the engine and the car acted like they were stock, had better driveability, better performance and better mileage. So my vote goes to the big block.

For ease of install in a Demon I'm gonna vote for a 360. No 10 lb firewal relocation and a small block in an A body can transfer weight to the rear wheels like a madman. Like the man said though, first thing you need to decide where you want to end up then the best way to get there becomes clear. quick street toy? Flat out flyin quarter miler? 50/50? high budget or low budget? 440 definetely makes more power per dollar you spend but it doesnt work with the chassis quite as well as a small block. Decisions decisions, everything in life is a tradeoff. Unless of course you have unlimited money

Shadowrider, have you had a BB A-body? You tell that the chassis does not work as well, at least in my case it did. The 60 ft times with regular street tires were slightly better than with the 360, best being 1.938. That's with stock old suspension. Weight distriubtion was about 54% in front, that's not too bads I think. No hammer was needed during the install, the only pain was the headers, but now Schumacher carries decent headers that should fit and work pretty good. Currently the car has a lighter 400 based engine and a weight distribution of 52/48 and it runs low 11's at over 125 mph through mufflers, street tires and on pump gas. I think it would be much harder with a SB. Putting in a 360 is a lot easier route and will make a decent runner, but I think a BB is better and definitely worth the hassle.

If its a street car, what about handling? I've got a 340 in an a body cuda and it handles great. I've no experience with the big blocks. Can you tell a differnce? I like to go fast through the turns as well as the straightaways.

The hassle of a big block swap is more than made up for by the looks people give you every time you pop the hood.If you want a car that handles in the corners the big block is not it.Stopping is also harder.

Stopping ain't an issue and running an aluminum intake on the 440 as well as relocating the battery to the trunk (I love Optima batteries) will more than compensate for the extra weight of the 440.
To stop on a dime go disc brakes and go large. ALL my RWD Mopars run the big 11.75" rotors off of 70's B bodies, two bolt aluminum M/C of an 80's Diplomat and most of them don't have power brakes. I also run the 11" drums off the 80's Diplomat copcars. I stop real hard when I need to. Axe the booster if you have one, that'll kill some nose weight AND give you better acess to the 440. Fab an adapter for the 2-4 bolt M/C swap out of a piece of 5/16" aluminum and run an A body manual brake pushrod, works perfect and is dirt cheap. Or spend $$$ for the MP equivalent. Run the Diplomat copcar proportioning valve and you have it set. All easy to get factory parts, no big bucks hard to find in Doofus, TN (Al Gore's hometown) aftermarket parts. handling ain't a problem either, T bars are cheap, get fatter ones and get swaybars. Even if you go smallblock. a bigblock mopar engine might be 100lbs more at the most than a small block. if u build a 451 stroker the difference is even less in weight. If its a street car the extra 50 or so pounds shouldent matter , will weigh less than an extra passenger.
