I have a 1963 Newport with a stock 8 1/4 rear end with drum brakes. I need a rear end that can handle 500 plus horsepower. I was wondering what third member should i put in, or should i keep the one i have and re-gear it. I also have the option of putting in a 9 inch ford rear from a 70's ford truck with disk brakes on the ford rear end. This car is not my daily driver so it will not see everyday use. It can be as much of a gass gussler as it wants. I will take it on the freeway some times, but i will mainly use it for crusing around, small city driving, and country roads. I also plan to take it to the strip a couple of times. Im am dropping in a 440 from a 71 challenger, and I am going to use an automatic trans. Thank you for the help.

The 8 1/4 rear is not up to snuff for it. You'll brake it before long. It can handle alot, but would not trust it for prolonged use.

You can find 9 1/4 rear ends from Big cars and wagons for dirt cheap. They can handle the power you are talking about. I paid $35 for one 2 years ago that was out of a 74 wagon.
