Question

do any of you think this sounds right? per my last post about no power in my 95 3500, took it to the local dealer to have the overhead ran and the injector pump checked. yesterday they told me that the transfer pump was weak and there was a fuel line sucking air and a fuel line with a slight leak going to the injector pump, and that my injectors checked OK and they felt like the injector pump was working properly, the service manager said they drove it with a scan tool hooked up and it told them low fuel pressure from the transfer pump (can they actually check it this way?) now the part that concerns me is they gave a price of $740.00 ($650.00 for the pump) to replace the pump and 2 hoses and tune the injector pump, this sounded very high to me so I got the truck back last night and called the local Cummins service center and they quoted me a price of $140.00 for the pump. now I don't have much faith in the dealer. question, I'm a pretty fair shade tree mechanic (pulled and replaced quite a few engines and trans) is this something I can do myself and if it is do any of you have any advice before I do it or should I let the Cummins place do it? by the way the dealer did not run the overhead because they said it might not need it because my power loss was due to the fuel problem, should I not still have it done, I have only had the truck 1 week and have no idea when it was done last. thanks.........

Cool

PHEW,,Lot of money for a lift(transfer)pump,,Yes they do seem to develop leaks and are know for that as is the fuel return line for cracking and leaking, both will cause a lack of power and hard starting,,Did you check the throttle cable??,,Lift pump change is not a hard deal just messy and time consuming(there are time you need more than two hands and only have room for one set),,Let me know what two fuel lines were leaking ,,$140 for the lift pump from Cummins shop is not a bad price, last one I paid for was just a tad over that,,Mopars price is outrageous,,I believe that they miss quoted you on that or the man looking it up did not know what he was doing,,Now the valves, since you just purchased it and do not know the service record,I'd have them adjusted just so you have a baseline to go by,,Mopar in owners manual calls for every 24,000 miles for them to be lashed,,I do mine every 20,000,,Seems like you can do all work you need its up to you how you tackle it,,Let me know if I can help.......

Thumbs down

well friday afternoon I put the transfer pump on that I got from cummins with the new hoses, and it did not change a thing! so the dealer gave me bogus information, so now I'm starting from zero again.

Default

Get the valves adjusted and check your throttle cable position for full throttle,,Do you notice any white smoke when starting or is it hard to start at all,,The Chrysler book calls for the valves to be adjusted every 24,000 miles and I do mine at 20,000 and do not pass it,,One thing to check is the overflow valve mounted on the p7100 injection pump,,its located at the front of the pump,in front of the delivery valvesad will look like a heim joint with a fuel line on it,,These valves DO go bad and are KNOWN for major power losses,,If you not sure where its at check with the cummins dealer the'll show you,,You can get them for around $50to $75 dollars,,Mopar will want more,,I'll try to send a diagram of where it is as soon as I return this week,,Will check for your next post on friday to see if you got it fixed when I return from the Valley of the Sun...
