Okay, let me ask this another way.
When you drain the tranny fluid and replace the filter,
how many quarts of fluid do you use.
Torque convertor is not drained.
Can't trust the markings on the dipstick.
Thanks

My 74 service manual says to add 6 quarts then more to get it to the add one pint level. This is with draining the converter. A Chilton manual says from 13.5 pints to 17.5 pints also with draining the converter. Why do you not trust the dipstick? It is the only way to really tell what the level is. The amount or tolerance from low fluid to overfull is one pint. Not much to play with. Did you cut down your tube for some reason? If you did there are ways of getting your dipstick to read correctly. Is it a big block or a small block trans? I have a SB 727 if you need a referance.

To add to what I just replyed to: if you measure how much you took out do you trust the amount that was put in the last time?

Hi Hammer 74,
I have a 727 hooked to a '66 383.
On another post I got measurements for the dipstick.
It is 17" from the full mark to where the top of the dipstick touches the dipstick tube. I measured mine so
I know I have the correct one.
The reason why I asked was that I recently had a mechanic change the fluid and filter. The TC was not drained. He used 4 and 1/4 qts. of fluid which does show full at hot/neutral.

My real problem is now when I start the car from sitting overnite and letting it idle to warm up there is a distinct
buzz sound that doesn't go away until the engine warms up to normal operating temp. Then all is okay.

So I was just wondering if the refill amount had something to do with it.
