I have the chance to buy some 69' 340 heads, intake, and 4 barrel carb for dirt cheap. I plan on putting this on my 74 318 along with a mild cam. But I dont know what cam to buy for this set up or what else I would need. Im looking for the biggest horsepower boost I can get. Can anybody help?

Sounds like a good deal. It depends on what you want from your car as well as if you plan on changeing your torque converter and the rear end ratio.
If no change is going to occur then a resto 340 HP cam is max in size. If you change the rear ratio and converter, you could very well use the purple 292 cam along with a little head porting. Ethier way, your going to need to mill the heads or use higher compresion pistons to keep compresion ratio up. 9.0-1 for the first suggestion, 10-1 for the second. Milling the heads might only produce a 9-1 ratio. Not sure of max milling on those heads or max compresion gain ethier. |

This combo with the Lunati 280-480 bracketmaster cam and a TCI 2000 stahl imprest me enough to make me a believer in the 318. A real believer. The only thing i would check about the heads is if they have had hardened seats installed in exaust. This could be expensive if not. I cannot stress enough though , be carefull what cam manufacturer you use. Crane,Comp Cams,ect. Allot of cam grinders build Chebby cams and just offer them for mopars. Mopars use a larger lifter diameter, makes a big difference in the cam grind. I've always had good luck sticking with Mopar Performance cams, why fight a good thing, and the lunati bracket master. Like rumbelfish360 suggested, be positive of what you are looking for performance wise before you do anything. Nothing will satisfy like good planing.

Love My MoPar;
SmokeDog is right about liffter design, take advantage of the larger liffter and use cam makers that take advantage of it to in there cams. Theres horse power in them there liffters. Believe it or not. |

Thanks for the info, and I do plan on changing the rear gear ratio and converter... with that said, what kind of performance do you think will this set up get?

I got 8.66:1 out of my 318 milling the 318 heads .080+". With 340 heads the situation is a tad worse and you propably won't be nowhere near 9:1 without changing the pistons. Milling heads that much also causes some other not so desired 'features', like the lifter preload and manifold fit. They can be solved but a piston swap is the right way to go.
If going to a bugger cam than the 340 cam, you'll definitely need more stall speed and steeper gear ratio. Mine with the MP 268/272 cam & 2.95 gears was a real dog at low rpm but pulled pretty well above 4000. The 318 really reacts to the cam differently than a 340 or 260 and is easy to overcam. My car ('80 Aspen, 3600 lbs) run low 15's in the 1/4 with the forementioned CR and cam, performer intake, headers, single 3" exhaust and ported 318 heads. |

well, thanks for all the help.. but I decided to just go buy a 360 block and build off of that instead of my 318, figured Its not much more and I'll get more power out of it.

That's propably the wisest thing man can do. Altho there is nothing particularily wrong with the 318, the 360 has 42 more cubes to begin with. All things being equal the 360 is quicker and more streetable than the 318.

The 360 is a nice choice. It has more stroke than the other small blocks and even the B engine (3.53 for the 360 compared to 3.375 for the B). Therefore it has more torque potential than the other small blocks (larger stroke = more torque). It also has the light weight of the small block. Put on some 2.02 heads, nice cam, and go Chevy hunting with a 'lil ol' 360 "smog motor".
